Voyage of the Indus and the Calcutta Strait Escape

The Indus crew endures mutinous officers, pirate threats, and perilous squalls in the Strait of Malacca. Jack Bruce and Davy Dorn lead a rousing mutiny quashing effort, salvage the ship, then sail toward Calcutta with oddsifting battles against pirates and fate. The voyage continues toward Mocha and Muscat, with the boys shaping plans for new adventures aboard the Lancaster.

Free Show Along Ceylon Bay Described by Two Sailors

In a sheltered bay on the Ceylon coast the Indus enters a twelve to fifteen mile circuit of water enclosed by green encircling forests and narrow islets. Bob Allen and Tom Dean marvel at the uninhabited scenery as parrots and monkeys fill the trees while the ship recovers a lost small boat after a squall.

Unwelcome Visitor Among The Monsoon Voyages

A fragment recounts pleasant weather and distant canoes from Zanguebar to Hindoostan as a brig nears Bab-el-Mandeb. The crew recalls Kidd the pirate and his first attack on ships, with doggerel about the rover echoing over the sea.

Locust Storm Sweeps aboard Mocha Portends Doom

In a vivid tale segment, young mariners aboard a brig endure a nightmarish locust squall that darkens the day and blankets decks with millions of insects. The insect tide, invading cabins and sails, lingers for weeks, souring the Arabian voyage and hinting at pestilence spreading from land to sea near Mocha.

Chapter XXII Bassoran Muscat and a New Ship

The Indus sails from Bab el Mandeb into Aden’s auli and meets the southwest monsoon along Arabia’s coast. Passing the Strait of Ormus, they view Ormus island and the Persian Gulf, then navigate to the Euphrates mouth and up to Bassorah. Muscat’s busy harbor displays ships of 400 tons, diverse crews, and strategic fortifications as British ships and many navies converge in this storied trading region.

The English Captain and Crew at Sea

A juvenile tale follows the Lancaster voyage from Muscat to Singapore. The young crew, including American shipmates, clash with a vain English captain Captain Ailsworth and his inept command. The sailors, both English and Yankee, endure mutinous spirits and perilous passages with the Malays and a Portuguese brig nearby.
