A city school pupil named Willio struggled in class and lagged at the foot of his grade. His teacher devised after school private instruction to draw out his mind from the perceived dullness and darkness.

About half have responded favorably despite market overstock concerns.
Travelers from the East can no longer buy through tickets to Kansas City as the Michigan Central plans a circular boycott of twenty five trunk-line roads. Western lines drop sale of through tickets, with Northwestern Illinois Central and Milwaukee St Paul exempted by Chicago roads. Lake Shore joins boycott, leaving Baltimore & Ohio and Grand Trunk as the only seaboard lines not turning Western tickets.
Curcaco Apr 8 The general passenger agent of the Pennsylvania Company sent a private letter to general passenger agents of Western lines stating the road only temporarily agreed to allow differential passenger rates for weaker lines east of Chicago and St Louis. The company would claim any road selling a through ticket at a higher rate than another road is discriminatory under interstate law.
In Prorsmunra Pennsylvania April 11 a massive fraud by Pan Handle freight workers unmasked. Forty four men arrested along the line from Columbus to Pittsburg as detectives recover goods and seize hundreds of warrants. The scheme, spanning three years, tapped hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise and involved rail crews, fences, and a jewelry store front.
A Wednesday night fire raged through a five story Essex Street tenement in New York City, spreading to a neighboring building. About 120 people were in the structures, with thirteen taken to Gouverneur Hospital and six to Bellevue, many severely burned. A girl about ten died at Bellevue. Fire escapes saved several lives, and property losses were estimated around two thousand dollars for repair and two thousand for rebuilding.
Incendiary blaze destroys much of Kuty in Austrian Galicia. A dynamite explosion at Taganrog, Russia, sparked a rapid fire consuming a row of houses. Buchel village in St. Gall canton endured extensive fire burning sixty homes and many cattle. Aldershot military camp saw seven eighths of its area burned.
Irish American delegation met with Colonel Lamont to invite the President to attend a Washington gathering protesting Ireland policy. He was told it would be improper for him to attend in his official capacity, and the committee withdrew.
Mr James G Blaine is ill at Fort Gibson Lt with a harsh cold that developed into broncho pneumonia. Doctors fear complications though he remains in no immediate danger. He is bedridden but able to speak faintly this morning. The attack followed exposure to a norther and limited nourishment. Despatch from St Louis notes Blaine in the same favorable state with no fever and good appetite.

Of 5140 registered women, 3038 voted, with over one fourth opposing the WCTU candidate. Weaver won by a large margin.
Monday's Michigan returns show a clear Republican state ticket lead of roughly 10 000 to 12 000 per the Detroit Tribune and Free Press estimates. Prohibition amendment appears defeated with Southern counties backing it, upper peninsula hindered by snow storm, with scattered and incomplete results suggesting a safe Republican plurality overall.
Municipal elections in Cincinnati and Cleveland yielded a late swing to Republicans in Cincinnati where the Labor party ran its own ticket but Smith narrowly led the mayoral race by margin over 600 after complete returns. The rest of the Republican ticket, except Police Court judge, appeared elected. In Cleveland the Democratic slate headed by K D Ka cock won by about 3000, with the Board of Aldermen likely Democratic as well.
In Texas second district Colonel William H. Martin Democrat was chosen to fill the unexpired term of John H. Reagan. Republicans offered no candidate. Knights of Labor claim a victory in Dubuque Ta with their entire ticket carrying by a large majority and forecast control for a year.
Ottawa reports strict new orders for customs officials examining baggage of railway passengers entering Canada from the United States. The regulations mirror the U S steamship passenger inspections in New York, applying similar scrutiny to foreign arrivals.
Evening talk centers on obtaining a load of sawdust for a tour. Mr Sawlog questions expected price while the manager hints the programme will note the sawdust comes from the celebrated Sawlog & Co.
The New York general strike by city plumbers over enforcing an apprenticeship system is declared off. The dispute began on September 1, 1886, and the journeymen paid out over $100,000 in strike benefits during the fight.

The panel aims to determine sums due the government, focusing on Central Pacific and Northern Pacific with about fifteen smaller lines. Relying on hearings in Washington San Francisco Omaha and Boston, the group will examine management and finances, with first witnesses soon. The commission seeks a thorough report by December and involves officials from all lines.
In Rahway New Jersey on April 10 the murdered girl found March 26 was displayed again with flowers around her head. About 2000 people viewed the morgue as officials note conflicting identifications while investigators hold a burial order with undertaker Kyne awaiting instruction.
Former Elizabeth police chief Yates telegraphs Mayor Daley that he can positively identify the murdered girl. The message arrives April 10 and adds a lead to the ongoing investigation in the city.
Two Englishmen among 1738 duped by an employment agent arrived from Tennessee reporting they were hired to work the Tennessee Iron and Coal Company mines for about 40 dollars a month. They endured exposure, slept in freight cars, and witnessed guards with loaded guns. several men were shot. After letters to families were unanswered they deserted and scattered, some returning to England, others finding work near Chattanooga or in Pittsburg. The case will be taken to the British consul in Philadelphia.
Gurcaco April 6 A Times dispatch reports a mine blast at Vinia. The explosion's force and oil soaked engine house obliterated the structure. Eleven named workers perished: Miles Jarrett Dave Jones Bushey William Barnes Charles Parsons Bert French. Thirteen rescuers also suffocated including James W James McGinnis Jed Batz Thomas Nayen Mike Kelly Pat Glancy George Kerier John Williams Peter Renald William Hudson and others.
Jamestown New York April 9 Burglars struck a dozen homes recently. A. H. Catlin fired on a thief near his Sixth and State residence wounding Chester W Keen of Bradford Pennsylvania who died on the lawn. Police identified the dead man via pawn tickets. The gang, believed to include three or more men, had targeted homes including those of Weeks and Garfield. Catlin, a respected 55 year old businessman, acted in defense.
In a letter from Piersuenc Penn, GM Siebert reports cholera spreading in Santiago Chile from February 10 to April 7, with 700 to 800 buried in the cholera cemetery and cases rising for weeks. The city restricts fruit sales while foreign colonies and local associations provide free medical care and shelter in lazaretos.
A Pacific gale capsized the coal vessel El Dorado off Cape Flattery on April 1. Captain Humphreys perished, two crew saved, two bodies recovered by Fanny Dutard. Other wrecks include the Champion of Nealth Bay and the St. Vincent near the Straits of Fuca. The Mexico abandoned after running ashore near Nanaimo amid severe weather.
In Quebec on April 11 a French Salvation Army detachment marching the streets was attacked by a mob that pelted them with snow and ice. A woman suffered a serious head injury from a five-pound ice fragment. police made no arrests.
Nengasxa Crry Neb April 11 The Missouri Pacific night passenger train wreck near this city on January 11 killed the engineer James Dewitt and injured others. James Bell and David Hoffman were indicted for first degree murder. Hoffman stood trial as the juror weakened Bell on the stand admitting Hoffman did the deed while Bell was drunk. The jury quickly returned a first degree murder verdict.
Woonsocket reports the passing of Louis Gaudin aged 109 after a brief illness. The long life included a wife who died at 102 two years earlier and Gaudin’s mother who lived to 103. Gaudin had enjoyed health and happiness prior to his decline.
