Dan iel Steinmann with Captain Schoonhoven ran aground near Sambro Light twenty miles from the coast. Of ninety passengers and forty crew only nine saved. The captain and eight passengers survived after a brutal night in ferocious seas and a fog shrouding the light. Rescue boats faced mountains of surf but found the two men clinging to the rigging and brought them ashore with exhaustion and injuries.
Captain Schoonhoven recounts the wreck of the steamship Steinmann near Sambro Island in dense fog. Miscalculation of reckoning led to collision with Mad Rock and Garden Shoal, passengers and crew swept overboard, only one lifeboat saved seven, two men clung to a topsail yard by dawn, rescuers reached them, emigrants stranded without aid.
Halifax April 7 Following an interpreter aided epitome of survivors statements the Daniel Steinmann sank after the second list and a boat was launched. In the South Atlantic on March 13, 1880, the Eliza Adams and the Greyhound near 28 west and 14 507 south both harpooned a whale at nearly the same moment. A Cleveland to Toledo tow exploded off Vermilion near Black River around midnight. Captain John Hobson and two engineers aboard the Peter Smith perished or were injured. three others were blown overboard and presumed drowned. Injured crew members Dennis and James Sullivan and Captain Tom Deweger were taken to Cleveland for treatment. The Peter Smith, valued at 10000 with newly rebuilt boilers, faced an unknown cause for the blast.
A Portland tale recalls a devoted fiancée who, after her betrothed deserted her for an actress, traveled to Philadelphia to care for him in a hospital. Two days before his death he married the loyal woman who had supported him, leaving behind a tear stained confession and vague notes of $600 she had sent him on prior to his illness.

Sunday she remained unstable and threatened self harm at the Lambs.

The tale is widely doubted as harmful gossip from mischief-makers in Washington.

In Kenduskeag a horse and wagon were found on a cake of ice near Baker bridge after Mrs H A Buzzell of Hudson tried to cross overflowed road to her father’s home in Glenburn. The horse drowned and Mrs Buzzell is likely dead with her cape and shawl found nearby. She was about 40 and left a husband and four children.
Gloucester on April 7 reports that since August gales nineteen Gloucester fishing vessels have sunk, eighteen with all aboard. Together with sailors lost at sea who did not return, the death toll reaches 254 men, leaving 65 widows and 124 fatherless children.
A telegram from Osceola Clearfield County reports a great strike has begun with all regional mines halted. Miners demand semi monthly wages and freedom to purchase, plus drivers paid 175 dollars per day, while offering to accept wage cuts if accepted.
An express train from Toronto to Montreal derailed near Wales Ontario. Driver John Donohue and fireman Charles King were killed. About a dozen passengers were lightly wounded. L D Swett of Springfield Massachusetts suffered a fractured collarbone and was unable to be moved from Wales.
London reports a schooner wrecked off the Shetland Islands during Tuesday's gale. Thirteen crew and two passengers perished. The vessel is identified as the Danish bark Alba bound for Davis Strait.
