Warship Collides With Fishing Schooner Off Cape Cod
The US auxiliary cruiser Prairie and the Boston schooner Flora St Nickerson collided about 15 miles off Nauset Light Cape Cod before daylight. The Nickerson was dismasted and crew of 24 endured a perilous encounter with some trapped for nearly half an hour while others escaped unharmed. The Prairie suffered minor damage while the Nickerson had a smashed bowsprit and torn deck. Authorities attribute the crash to misjudgment by helmsmen and watches aboard both vessels. This was the Nickerson’s second accident in 24 hours after a tow-boat collision at the dock.
