Local cheap line experiment expands across suburbs
Mr. Jackson notes the first line opened in March in Everett and Malden, followed by May in Medford and Somerville, June in East Boston, August in Charlestown and other towns, September in Dorchester and Roxbury. New lines last Saturday reached West Roxbury and a link between Allston and Dudley via Brookline Village. The cheap service remains an experiment with potential fare changes based on profitability and system-wide effects. Trustees will decide when feasible, possibly raising local rates or adjusting the basic 10 cent fare depending on viability and impact on overall revenue.
