Potatoes Rise On Shortage And Transport Woes
Potatoes cost consumers well above last year with prices rising due to a nationwide crop shortage and drought in key states. Maine farmers receive about 1.50 a barrel, while Boston dealers charge 1.60 to 1.65 for 120 pound sacks. Rail strikes on Bangor and Aroostook hinder shipments, though railroad officials dispute major delays. Union officials suggest Maine Central may absorb the Bangor and Aroostook line.
