President Taft cites Proverbs to urge calm discourse as a soft answer can turn away wrath while harsh words inflame anger. He emphasizes restraint and measured speech in public life and private debate.
In Salt Lake City Taft preaches on courtesy and public duty echoing Roosevelt. He urges politeness, respect for differing views, and daily small acts shaping character. He stresses family life over grand gestures and notes healthy children reflect a community's well being.
Weather permitting the Fulton flight contest will send three airships from Fulton Flight square at 119th Street to Albany over 142 miles. The craft must reach Albany first without landing en route to win the $10,000 prize, matching Fulton’s historical steamboat feat.
The three motor airships will race along the Hudson River toward Albany following Fulton and Hudson’s historic route. They depart from Fulton Flight square, pass Grant’s tomb and a grand naval display, glide above New York and the Rhine of America country, and are welcomed by cheering towns along the way. Matthew J. Doran, 70, of 16 Sheridan Street, Jamaica Plain, was struck and knocked down by an automobile owned by Harry B. Burley of Newton Street, Brookline, while crossing Centre Street near his home. He was taken to City Hospital for surgery, where Dr. Fitzsimmons, assigned to the case, fainted and revealed that the victim was his uncle.
Wealthy Brookline resident and Dorchester insulated wire firm treasurer Mr. Burley was arrested by Reserve Officer Shone of Station 13 for dangerous driving. He posted 500 bail. Mathew Doran, struck near Centre Street while heading to the Sacred Heart service, suffered a broken foot, right ribs dislocation, and head bruises. Doran underwent surgery at City Hospital. Burley to appear in West Roxbury Court today.
William N. Murdock, a wealthy Scituate resident and embalming fluid inventor, raided a lodging house last night and trapped his wife, daughter of town treasurer John D. Ferguson, with her eloped companion.
With three detectives trailing Miss Lillian Sampson to Mrs. Murdock’s Boston rooming house, the couple’s domestic trouble escalates. Mrs. Murdock, aided by Frank Merritt, endured a late night scene as the detectives obtained admission. The dispute began nine months earlier in New Bedford and a divorce libel is currently pending.
Washington reports a New England forecast with rain Monday and possibly Tuesday. Cool, brisk north winds are expected.

New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds split a double header while Brooklyn and St. Louis break even. Taft offers Yale football leaders tips to counter Harvard. Harry Whitney accuses Peary of withholding approval and forcing a promise about polar work. He claims Cook was kept from the Roosevelt mission until Whitney asserted there were no Cook-related effects. Whitney asserts Cook later found the pole and supplied supporting evidence.
In the 1909 account, explorers in icy Arctic conditions push on on snowshoes with ice axes while sleds follow. They land supplies on the north shores and observe a growing lead as central ice pack meets land ice, noting winds currents and tides drive the pack’s movement and the danger of shifting ice.
The expedition reveals sledges and shoes worn on the dash to the pole, showing wear from the rough Arctic ice. The artifacts illustrate the arduous journey and the strain endured by the party during the polar crossing.
Harry Whitney reports to the New York Herald and Boston Post from Indian Harbor Labrador that he carried Dr Cook’s trip records instruments and the American flag to Roosevelts ship the Roosevelt but Peary forbade returning Cook’s property. Whitney says he buried Cook’s effects at Etah and swore he disposed of them. He insists Cook discovered the pole.

Harry Waitney of New Haven aboard the Strathcona relief schooner Jeanie recounts meeting Dr. Frederick A. Cook on the ice after his North Pole expedition. Waitney, who spent winter in the Arctic, says Cook was the first white man he had seen in about 15 months and the first person outside Cook’s Eskimo boys in that period.
