Groversten Sept 26 The northeast storm struck with no warning as ships anchored offshore faced hurricane winds. Fishing schooners Flora Dilloway Lizzie Griffin and F A Smith dragged ashore at Ten Pound Island but were later hauled off with little damage. Abbie P Cranmer of Baltimore bound for Portsmouth ran ashore at Collin's Beach. life-saving crews and volunteers attempted lines and rescue. Captain Brown fell overboard but the woman passenger was rescued. crew later cared for at Trumball's café. Lt W Hine also grounded. no major damage reported.
In Indianapolis on September 26 General Harrison described using recovered Civil War taxes to ease state treasuries. He urged distributing a $20 million surplus among states, citing Indiana would gain about $1 million. He compared the plan to a delinquent member paying an overdue assessment. Meanwhile Blaine’s Indiana dates were outlined for October while another district convention in Worcester nominated Irving B. Sayles after John E. Russell declined to run.

Two unidentified men were struck and killed by a New York and New England railroad train at the Oakland street crossing yesterday at 6 30 p m. One man was about 25, 5 feet 8 inches. the other about 35, 5 feet 9 inches. A letter addressed to T Dugan from J Murphy of New York City morgue was found in the younger man's pocket.

In Lowell on September 26 the eighth district Republican convention met at Jackson Hall with light turnout due to a severe storm. George A. Marden opened proceedings, Warren H. Atwood was named temporary chairman, and W. G. Merrill became temporary secretary as credentials showed 91 delegates from two cities and twenty-four towns. Mary George S. Merrill urged party duty in the campaign.
