At the Saratoga Convention Hall on Sept 25 the Republican State convention adopted a ticket led by John I Gilbert for Secretary of State and included Martin W Cook as Comptroller Ira M Hedges for Treasurer James M Varnum for Attorney General William P Van Rensselaer as State Engineer and A Haight for Judge of the Court of Appeals The delegates rejected the John J OBrien slate and approved the party platform urging protection for industries and labor pensions postal service reform civil service and ballot measures at the state level and endorsing national Republicans led by President Harrison.
The Mississippi Republican convention met in Jacks, Sept 25, with B. K. Bruce as temporary chairman. General Chalmers denounced Democrats and urged a State ticket. A vote of 159 to 95 favored nominations, listing James R. Chalmers for Governor, James D. Lynch for Lieutenant Governor, M. C. Mollison as Secretary of State, and John S. Jones as Treasurer.
The American conference will use a fitted house in Washington as its headquarters. Delegates will meet Secretary Blaine at the State Department on October 1, with a reception the next day and a possible White House reception or Blaine dinner that evening. The group tours manufacturing cities and returns November 18 after forty days.
President Harrison, with Senator Davis and other officials, reviews the Cumberland Maryland parade on Sept. 25 as part of Allegheny County's centennial celebration. Twenty thousand locals greet the party. a reception and luncheon follow before the return to Deer Park.
James Tanner defends pension policy and criticizes officials in a letter to J. M. Dalzell from Caldwell Ohio. He discusses orders on examining low monthly pensions, reratings, and raises, notes his resignation under pressure, and hints that Ohio boys may leave him “in the soup” if policy continues.
In DuBlin on September 25 Catholic chaplains in Irish jails organize to claim exemption from prison rules. The Derry jail chaplain was dismissed on suspicion of delivering letters to Mr. Conybeare after refusing to answer related questions. The Clonmel jail priests were dismissed for supplying Dr Tanner with sandwiches and tobacco.
The Sultan met foreign diplomats in Tangier and agreed to seek reparations for the Rif War incident. He will stay two weeks and observed night exercises aboard the British torpedo boat Fearless with his ministers.
A terrific storm in Naples floods a large part of the city. Premier Crispi's villa is submerged as waters rise, leaving extensive damage reported today in Rome.
George B MeAskie fifteen son of John MeAskie died after losing control of a mustang pony on Elm Street. He fell and was dragged along Gorham Street striking poles before dying en route to hospital. His mother and sister were in Boston for a wedding.
The final session of the National Council meeting in SALum named new officers including National councillor John Smith of New Brunswick New Jersey and vice councillor Charles H Jewett of Salem. Also elected were secretary John Server of Philadelphia treasurer Joseph H Shinn of New Jersey marshal N J Little of Delaware national retector W N Simon of Connecticut and door keeper J T Disney of Maryland.
The Lily wreck disaster near Point Armour Forteau Bay Labrador on September 16 left several dead as lifeboats capsized in heavy surf. Emerald brought survivors and ship papers to Halifax. two sailors drowned earlier and six bluejackets survived.
Schooner Loring B Haskell from the Grand Banks arrived at Louisburg with sails missing. Sails forwarded by steamer to Sydney then stored in a bonded warehouse, duty of 1155 dollars demanded before delivery. Captain Johnson advised by Ottawa that privilege requires duty or US vessel license. repairs can be done at Sydney without duty. Captain refuses sails and plans to return home without them.
At Worcester’s afternoon and evening concerts the festival crowd filled the hall and praised Mme Clementina de Vere and Mrs Corinne Moore Lawson. The evening featured Sir Arthur Sullivan’s cantata The Golden Legend, which critics found disappointingly unfounded in feeling and originality though some soloists and the chorus and orchestra were commended for skill.
Captain George F Bauidry a renowned Arctic whaleman dies at Monument Beach aged sixty four He was among the most successful whaling captains in northern waters and in the last five seasons took 124 whales His last voyage was in the steamer Arca of San Francisco in 1888.
The Massachusetts Republican State convention at Tremont Temple renominated John Q. A. Brackett for governor and others for top posts. Delegates watched a tense ballot process with attempts to stuff the ballot box, unanimity following Brackett’s nomination, and leaders like Robinson Lodge Hoar and Burdett shaping the platform and tariff reform emphasis.
