The Old Timers showcased prime baseball on Plantington avenue grounds with flawless fielding and sparkling play. The exhibition drew a large crowd as veterans from colleges and the diamond era impressed observers with skill and sportsmanship.
Harvard uniforms led the fray as A G Spalding strode to the platter amid cheers from megaphone aides. Al Spalding tabbed a high ball to Mr Munn at short in an opening rush, while Jimmy O’Rourke and Tim Murnane added early singles, leaving the Professionals scoreless after the first inning.
Syracuse oarsman James Ten Eyck, famed as Syracuse varsity stroke, is arrested in Syracuse on a grand larceny charge connected to a $1500 loss by Stephen S. Gauss of Salem Savings Bank. Gauss reportedly confessed to taking the same amount to cover the loss amid a pool game described to police. The case ties to a Boston swindle last August. Ten Eyck denies involvement.
Mrs Annie Pearlswig, burned in a July 30 fire on Cross street, undergoes skin grafting to the face. Bernard McGovern donated skin strips, with Joseph Pearlswig and others to follow. Doctors Fritz W Gay Victor Shapiro and William J McBain lead the first such operation in Malden at Malden Hospital.
Clinton E. Childs died after being shot in the chest while aboard a car departing Waverley at 5 31 a m He and his son occupied a room at 613 Massachusetts avenue and Childs refused to identify the shooter Police and a Post reporter traced his carriage to the Belmont transit line line of inquiry continues as investigators seek a motive and suspect.
The severely wounded man walked from Waverley to the Boston car line and home, eluding immediate recovery. Police from Boston and Belmont seek the shooter and motive. Harold Childs, manager of Yatter's pool room at 578 Washington Street, was awakened by his father’s collapse and summoned Dr Bowles near Massachusetts and Washington.
Salisbury reports a fatal lightning strike at the Haverhill Danvers Amesbury Street Railway power station. Chester Parker, in charge at night, died after touching a bucket edge while attempting to douse a fire. Robert Dale survived a near fatal shock. The bolt delivered about 13,200 volts.
In 1904 Standard Oil and other big interests were asked to support the Republican national campaign fund. The first request was refused by Henry H. Rogers. A second call led Cortelyou, head of the RNC, to seek an appointment to explain the conditions and obtain Standard Oil’s financial backing.
Bryan seeks Haskell's ouster as treasurer of the Democratic campaign committee. DNC Chairman Mack defends a $300,000 fund contribution as a campaign stimulant. Kern criticizes Roosevelt's timing. Taft pledges a tariff revision session if elected. Bryan draws big crowds in Cincinnati and urges Roosevelt to honor the square deal.
In Cincinnati on September 24 authorities say Governor Charles N Haskell of Oklahoma will resign as treasurer of the Democratic national committee and William Jennings Bryan will press for his exit if the governor does not resign voluntarily within forty eight hours.
Telegrams pour in for Mr. Bryan about the Haskell case as Governor Haskell presses for a personal interview tomorrow in Indiana. Bryan remains firm that Haskell must be cut from all further official Democratic campaign contact.

William Randolph Hearst at the Independence party state convention in Cooper Union alleged links between Governor Haskell and the steel trust through letters. He also presented letters tying Senator McLaurin and Congressman Sibley to Standard Oil dealings, while hinting Kern may need defense.
Hearst accuses Hughes of serving privileged interests as a corporation lawyer and protecting corrupt firms through public service commissions. He concedes Hughes opposes race track gambling but says subservience to special interests disqualifies him for Governor.
