Halifax reporters describe a destructive coastal storm with ships damaged along the coast. The steamer M A Stair dragged its anchor at Lunenburg, fouled the J W Arnold and the dictator, tore rails and windows, and grounded near the beach before being hove off. No injuries are reported amid widespread shipping damage.
Frizcupur RG Mass Sept 24 The wife and two children of E P Brown have been staying with Horace S Brooks in Ashby since July 1 while Mrs Brown suffers bronchial trouble. Her physician Dr Lamb forbids contact outside family and attendants. Attendant says Mrs Brown suspected financial embarrassment but not wrongdoing and information is kept from her. Neighbors say a man matching Brown’s description was seen at the house days ago, but no definite confirmation exists.
Camden Sept 24 the law and order society moved to prosecute those linked to stuffing and masking the ballot box at the fourth ward republican primaries. Warrants issued for John Sweeney judge Richard Pierson inspector John Kelly clerk of the primary board and ex Sheriff Jacob C Daubman. Daubman held on $1000 bail. others released on own recognizance.
About 300 members from Mazeppa encampment Providence Sarracus New Haven Burke Hill Charlestown and Baltimore Drill association with nearly 100 ladies visited Mt Vernon. They marched through Washington streets to the White House where they were received by the president. The group was photographed on the south front of the treasury building after leaving the White House.
Governor Pingree met with state supervisors in Brattleboro to urge President Cleveland to appoint a board of special medical inspectors. They would assist northern Vermont health boards to prevent the Quebec smallpox outbreak from spreading. The move aligns with Massachusetts Governor Robinson's similar request. Vermont lacks a regular health board, making the step a precaution.
The Worcester festival concerts feature Volkmann Symphony in D and Macfarren May Day Cantata in America firsts. Performers include Judi Teresa Careno, Stoddard, Liestemann and others as the evening shines. Cincinnati report says national confectioners association finished a two day session and will pursue legislation to curb adulteration. Committee retained counsel and will move to secure laws in multiple states.
In Dover New Hampshire on September 24 Winfield Smith attacked his brother Charles with an axe during a quarrel. Charles sustained severe head and face wounds. Winfield was arrested but Charles refused to press charges.
David B Hill wins the New York gubernatorial nomination after hours of roll calls and party maneuvering at Saratoga. Tammany and the county democracy clash over civil service reform as Hewitt draws applause but fails to secure the nomination. The convention adjourns after Hill's decisive ballot, with two local tickets anticipated.
At Saratoga on September 24 1884 the meeting elected George Raines of Monroe as temporary chairman by acclamation. Montreal reports 48 deaths from smallpox on Tuesday amid halted commerce and strained health efforts. The Boston Sub Treasury floods the public with silver cartwheel dollars daily in the amount of 15 000 to 35 000 and 4 000 to 10 000 in fractional silver stirring broad public protest and pressuring banks and merchants to accept large quantities of small denomination notes. The public, banks, and retailers complain that the clumsy coins are inconvenient, unwelcome, and triggering shortages of 1 and 2 bills and even scarce 5 notes. A veteran pensioner faced the currency crunch, reluctantly accepting silver pieces as hundreds pile up. Banks report strained, with customers resisting and merchants forced to push coins on customers and exchange them back at the treasury, fearing a premium on small bills if the shortage persists. Officials warn of continued influx and the risk of a wide currency misalignment.
Bellows Falls Vermont September 24 The Grand Army of the Republic of Vermont held its largest reunion with 800 veterans from 18 posts in Vermont and New Hampshire. A large pine grove tent hosted a supper for about 1000 as nearly 2000 were fed. Toasts honored Col A B Franklin Col L K Fuller Gov Kingree Col Hooker and A N Swain. A Windham county veterans association was formed with Franklin as president Hooker as VP Read as secretary and a five member executive committee. Brattleboro hosts next annual meeting.
Rockland Me Sept 24 The trial of Joseph E Clinton charged with assault with intent to kill on Thomas B Severance proprietor of the Lindsay house ended with a verdict of assault without intent to kill. The case grew out of liquor seizures at the Severance house with Clinton an assistant to Constable Orne. Sentence not yet pronounced.
A blaze discovered at 6 AM Thursday gutted Robert Frampton’s morocco factory on Neponset Avenue West Roxbury. Fire spread rapidly, $10,000 estimated loss, insured for $12,500 across buildings and stock including Hartford and Phenix policies. Factory to be rebuilt.
In New RepForpD Mass on September 24 at the Grinnell cotton mill steam burst when electric lights were installed under F B Comings of Dorchester. Comings and Superintendent Kent were knocked into a pit. Kent escaped with minor injuries while Comings suffered serious face head and chest injuries and was taken to St Luke's hospital.
Yale reports the largest entering Freshmen class on record with 160 in the academic division and 90 in the scientific departments. The increase comes as a surprise amid Harvard dropping Greek as a required study, a move thought to affect Yale’s enrollment.
