Chicago campaign trail ends a day of huge crowds from Trenton to Phillipsburg. Bryan argues free coinage aids labor, warns against scarce money, and urges voters to back the Chicago ticket amid strong public enthusiasm.
Henry G Peace and John Sheehan, pressroom colleagues at a Boston area plant, argued after midnight. Peace drew a clasp knife and made eight stab wounds, seriously injuring Sheehan who was treated at Massachusetts General Hospital. Peace was held without bail at Station 2.
Tammany Hall general committee met with a crowded wigwam approving resolutions endorsing William Jennings Bryan and Arthur Sewall and free silver. John Boyd Thacher was ignored, and W Bourke Cockran was denounced.
Assistant Secretary Hamlin heads to Gray Gables after leaving for New York. Secretaries Carlisle and Francis are present and Olney is close. A conference is expected to decide the administration's position on government officials campaigning for the Chicago nominees who have criticized the administration.
Bernard Block, 4 percent listed resident of No 5 Bartlett Place North End, jumped from a second story window yesterday afternoon shattering both kneecaps. He was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where surgeons report one knee cap had to be entirely removed in what is described as one of the worst such injuries observed.
The second edition of the Post Almanac is on hand and will be sold for ten cents each with a publication price of twenty five cents. It offers full election reports silver and gold statistics financial tables and many other useful data across 482 pages. Apply at the Boston Post counting room.
Mass Sept 23 President Cleveland is urged to back Palmer and Buckner and allow his name as a speaker for the Indianapolis ticket in New York. He resists aiding Chicago nominees and has shown party friendship for Bryan while opposing McKinley’s protection policies. A Palmer visit to Gray Gables could sway him before westward departure.
The New England Cotton Manufacturers Association met at Profile House with papers on fine yarns comber use condensed cotton yarn and condenser card. Dr William P Wilson spoke on museum support for exporters and 8000 cloth samples illustrated the talk. Eleven regular and five associate members were elected, bringing total to nearly five hundred.
George Fred Williams announces a pro Chicago policy manifesto to upset Boston party leaders. He backs James H. Mellen as temporary chair, John L. Rice as permanent chair, and Robert Treat Paine Jr. as resolutions chair to seize the convention and aid Bryan and Sewall. He warns of a grafted State committee and urges delegates to rally Friday and at Music Hall.
The judge said he would not comment further after reviewing Williams's manifesto. He noted no reference to him in the provocations and asserted leadership without proper authority remains unaddressed.
Moore and Sinnott of Philadelphia have secured a Suffolk County Superior Court injunction against Edward P. Clark & Co. of Boston to stop bottling and selling whiskey under the Gibson brand label not made by the plaintiffs. The order bars production or sale of Gibson’s XXXX Whiskey and prohibits labeling that implies plaintiffs’ manufacture or consent.
