Central America disaster and New York notes in 1857

In New York on Sept 22 1857 readers reflect on the foundering of the Central America and its blamed miscalculations in enlarging the vessel. Cabinet reshuffle signals changes in auditor and customs chief

The post office department Sixth Auditor Wm F Phillips is to be replaced by Dr Tate of Virginia on October first, and Hugh J Anderson, Commissioner of Customs, will be succeeded by Governor Ingham of Connecticut sometime in December. Both salaries are $3000 annually. The piece notes anticipated removals among bureau chiefs, a flood of diplomatic applicants, and calls for language ability in appointees, with reference to US relations with Britain and Central America.
