Union soldiers denied as Democratic stronghold claim
Gen Butler argues Union troops were mostly Democrats until short army service turned them Republican, noting Lincoln’s 1864 119,897 soldiers votes versus McClellan’s 33,748. He asserts army voting strength exceeds 150,000 ballots and Republican soldiers faced easier voting. Missouri Kentucky Maryland had over 120,000 Democratic soldiers in the Union army.
