Steamship Illyrian Eyes Liverpool Arrival Amid Boston Trade Debate

A Boston Post reader reports the Illyrian sailed from Constitution Wharf at 2 PM with a large cargo including grain flour canned goods butter and meat among others. He notes the Cunard Batavia claims Liverpool first but argues the Illyrian may arrive first, citing a nine day past voyage and calls for widening Commercial Street to attract shippers and revive Boston’s declining trade. The letter blames neglected terminal facilities for stagnating commerce and urges action to lease or buy three deep water wharves once the street is improved.
