Death of Prof Ebenezer Strong Snell of Amherst College

Prof Ebenezer Strong Snell of Amherst College, nearly 75, born in North Brookfield, led Amherst's mathematics and natural philosophy for decades. Destructive hurricane wrecks many ships near U S ports

Reports from Sept 17 to 20 detail losses and damage to brig Valencia loaded for New York and many other vessels. The Valencia, 305 tons, built 1864, owned by Emery Co and partners, foundered near Naguabo Porto Rico with crew saved. Other ships suffered ran aground, lost anchors, or broke masts near Hatteras and Cape Henry. One seaman died of dysentery aboard Naiad Queen. multiple vessels reported collisions, towings, and salvage operations along the East Coast and Delaware Bay.
