President Taft, departing Boston for New Haven and Cincinnati, said he will urge Congress in December to appropriate 2 million dollars to begin fortifying the Panama Canal with heavy guns. He favors canal defense and will discuss Supreme Court appointments with his Cabinet after Congress convenes.
President Taft departed quietly from South Station for New Haven aboard the midnight limited. He traveled with his sister-in-law Mrs More Captain Archie Butt a stenographer secretary and four secret service men estimated to stay two weeks in Beverly. Police and officials watched the party at the train shed with about thirty local observers noting the discreet departure as the New York Limited pulled away at midnight.
The President plans to ask Congress to fund two more battleships of the Dreadnought type. Taft argues economy should not prevent at least two ships yearly until the Panama Canal is finished, which could boost navy efficiency and allow slowing to one per year afterward. Cabinet meetings begin Feb 26 with daily sessions at the White House. Ballinger is expected to attend all meetings. the Ballinger case will not be taken up.
Six men narrowly escaped serious injury on Rattlesnake Hill near the Saugus line when a lit cigar butt dropped into a rock crevice triggering an un exploded dynamite blast. The explosion hurled rocks far into the air but none of the victims at the scene were struck.
The party included Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mears of Reading Mr. and Mrs. Harold Smith of Winthrop and the Misses Evelyn and Doris Currier of Greenwood. They were guests of the Currier girls' parents Mr. and Mrs. William Currier during the day.

Miss Mary Wall aged 37 of 7 Charles Street Charlestown was fatally injured when a runaway horse dragged her 20 feet in front of her mother's home at 7 Winthrop Street. She died at 11 pm at Relief Hospital while en route with Mrs Mary Sullivan and her daughter to visit family she had not seen in 10 years.
A woman and Mrs. Sullivan were on a crosswalk at the corner of Winthrop when the incident occurred. Authorities provided minimal details and continuing investigation is listed as ongoing.
The strain of the campaign appears to affect Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. After delivering a speech at Councillor J Stearns Cushings Norwood home he collapsed and fainted. A physician was summoned and the Senator soon recovered after stimulants. Doubt remains on his ability to fulfill upcoming speaking engagements.
Weather bureau forecasts above normal temperatures for most of the country this week. A cooler spell will hit New England and the Middle Atlantic tomorrow, then temperatures rise again afterward.

New York reports Miss Rose Pitonof of Boston aged 16 completed a record distance swim from New York Yacht Club landing No 2 to Coney Island Light in 5 hours 8 minutes. The course measured about 16.12 miles on the chart with detours bringing the total to an estimated 17.5 miles.

Niagara Falls N Y Sept 18 Captain Claus Larsen in the motor boat Ferro completed a four and a half mile passage from the Maid of the Mist dock at 4 45 pm to within a mile of Lewiston despite a leaking hull. He faced battering at the Whirlpool Rapids and had delayed departure due to engine trouble while authorities warned against the attempt.

Mrs Dodge guarded in Lunenburg home after arrest on murder charge in Dalton man William Heath death. Police report shows revolver with three empty chambers near Heath and paint brush in his hand, suggesting Heath did not shoot himself. no other occupants or staff were present.
Mrs. Dodge first reported Heath's death as death by own action. She said Dodge was hired to paint her house interior and began work Saturday morning in the bedroom. She said she saw him briefly, then, after hearing shots, found Heath in a pool of blood. She admitted the revolver used was hers and kept in a bureau drawer in the bedroom.
The forecast for New England calls for partly cloudy skies on Monday and Tuesday with cooler temperatures. Moderate northeast winds inland and along the coast shift to brisk along the shore, while steamers bound for European ports may face moderate to brisk north winds and partly overcast conditions toward the Grand Banks.
