The steamship Colon struggled into port after a Gulf hurricane with 100 mph winds. Three men died from noxious gases in the hold as 155 passengers endured panic and the vessel’s violent pitching.
John E Redmond Joseph Devlin and John Fitzgibbon arrived in the city amid cheers from more than 500 Irish supporters. The envoys came with a message of esteem and a promise that home rule and prosperity for Ireland are achievable. The reception was described as royal with many old friends greeting them warmly.
