A Monmouth Ill balloon ascent from Burlington Iowa ended with no passenger aboard due to gas loss and a detached basket. Professor Williams tried to ascend alone but failed as gas escaped and the craft descended. George Pfenning swapped places and rose with it then landed 12 miles away, losing a shirt when it tore on the anchor. it finally settled on a Catholic church steeple with Pfenning unharmed.
Tug Ranger tows barge Orient from New Orleans when anchor chain parts. Five crewmen aboard Orient perish after lifeboat capsizes and all survivors drift ashore on life preservers near the Beach hotel. Ranger unable to reach wreck in rough seas.
Cincinnati dispatch reports Gen Durbin Ward attacked on a Lebanon bound train after criticizing Police Lieut Mullen and United States Marshal Wright over the October election. Ward sustained a severe blow to the eye drawing blood, witnesses say other passengers separated the men.
Frank Knapp and Alonzo Knapp of Rochester pleaded guilty to breaking and entering a store and received six months in county jail. In Berry versus Young the defense filed an affidavit claiming a newspaper in the jury room reported evidence. A hearing on the motion to set aside is scheduled for Monday.
Cheyenne reports that Chinese and U S consuls are conducting a thorough inquiry into the Rock Springs outbreak that killed and injured miners. Officials urge United States courts to prosecute criminals, noting bias in local juries and plans to resume mining with white workers.
Gloucester district reports 511 vessels totaling 31 800 01 tons new tonnage up 10 ships and 972 99 tons from last year. Gloucester harbor holds 452 boats 29 311 75 tons up 11 vessels. Rockport 50 vessels 2 077 16 tons down one. Anesville Bay View Annisquam unchanged. 33 vessels added district wide, 12 brought in, 2 new. Twelve vessels lost totaling 647 44 tons valued at 58 200 insured 46 040 mainly Gloucester Mutual Insurance.

Philadelphia September 18 Captain Percy of the ship Standard and two mates were convicted of cruelty last Monday and fined and imprisoned. President Cleveland pardoned Percy and Judge Butler said no distinction should be made between the three men. The district attorney will inform the mates counsel of the court's view.
The brig Georgia sailing from Aspinwall Aug 12 with three men aboard ran on a reef off San Andreas. Captain ill and short-handed led to loss of vessel. The brig carried two seamen from the Frances Jane of Baltimore Captain Wollper.
Piets Burne Pa September reports a prolonged nail strike has emptied stores across the city and west. Dealers say current stock is the smallest in 20 years and an order for 100 kegs cannot be filled locally. The four month strike shows no sign of ending.
A southwest gale battered Sandwich Massachusetts forenoon through night. The strong wind forced a large bay fleet to anchor offshore, with 40 mackerel schooners seeking safety. Most vessels hail from Wellfleet and some from Boston as crews ride out the storm.
William H. Vanderbilt with George Vanderbilt and H M Twombly visits the old Vanderbilt farm at Newdorp Staten Island and to Moravian cemetery to view the vast mausoleum under construction. The structure will be 15 feet underground with eight catacomb sets, 72 chambers, extensive carvings from Creation to The Crucifixion, and an estimated cost of about $225000. The work is progressing rapidly.
Waterbury Vermont September 18 premiums awarded today at the Winooski Valley fair feature prizes across textiles knitwear and upholstery with Waterbury residents well represented among winners including silk bedspread afghan and table spread entries. Notable nonlocal winners include water color portrait by J F Gilman of Montpelier and embroidered banner by A U Baker of Montpelier among others.
In St Thomas Ontario on Sept 18 Prof Henry Ward and assistants began skinning and dismembering Jumbo for a Tufts College mount and Smithsonian skeleton while crowds watched. The cremation followed on a carefully built pyre as orderly farewells drew a large, grim crowd. In Buffalo, Jumbo is said to have saved Tom Thumb from a train wreck before perishing, with Tom Thumb badly injured.

In Harrisonburg on September 18 New England veterans, about 200 strong, were hosted by local citizens and Confederate veterans. Speeches by Gen E H Rhodes and Judge Paul framed a day of hospitality and northern southern reconciliation. The highlight was Union veterans decorating Confederate graves before returning to Winchester. The Winchester event featured Camp Russell fireworks, northern and southern speakers, and a trophy winning Winchester rifle team. Gen Fitzhugh Lee postponed his planned address.
In Montreal on Sept 18 the Grey Nuns report about 100 smallpox cases in Ste. Cunegonde and several in Gifietown. During a four to five day period they found over 50 additional cases in their routine visits. A case was centered at St. Lambert opposite the city and another in Antremont.
A large Montgomery and Clarendon street brick factory of the Smith American Organ company was badly damaged by a Friday evening fire. The four story plant, with a mansard roof and a basement, housed offices, trimming, action, machine, tuning and varnish departments and over 150 workers. Firefighters fought back the blaze, which spread from the third to the fourth floor, destroying the entire third floor and causing heavy water damage on lower levels. The blaze prompted multiple alarms, drew crowds, and caused extensive losses estimated at least 115000 with insurance unofficial.
Washington dispatch notes Sergeant-at-Arms Seedom's visit yielding new views on the Indian race. Red Cloud is labeled a loafer, opposing schooling and self-support, preferring white farmers to manage crops. Postmaster General names several fourth class appointments in Maine Massachusetts Connecticut Rhode Island and Vermont communities.
In municipal court Judge Hardy hears Ah Lung deny smoking opium in a joint with six others present. A chemist will analyze the contents. Sam Wing is found guilty of keeping the joint, fined $100, and committed until paid, with Wing appealing to the superior court.
Frank Jones & Son filed an attachment against City Architect Vinal for 5000 as a dispute over final settlement on the Harrison Avenue primary schoolhouse contract. The contract was about 14000, with most paid. no final bill yet. The case arises after extra work and a dispute over completion.

William Ring, 383 years old, an Irishman, lives with his wife Catharine at No 2 Union Court East Boston. He assaulted his wife with a pistol on Friday afternoon and was arrested. Ring denied harming her at the station, later expressing regret for not striking harder. Police say he previously assaulted his wife in a similar manner.

Sept 18 Marseille reports seven deaths from cholera in a day as a transport from Tonquin brings French troops. Fourteen soldiers died during the voyage and two more perished after arrival. Many others are ill with the disease, causing widespread alarm.
In Paris today Mme Theo the actress was injured when a horse bolted from her carriage. She jumped from the vehicle to avoid the plunge and sustained a deep arm gash and cuts to her hands. She was taken to a nearby shop, where she remained insensible for a time.
