In Rockland Maine on September 17 Charles Smith killed his wife her mother and their infant son after a jealous dispute. Smith shot Mrs Robbins in the eye then fired at Mrs Metcalf and her child before setting a lamp on the floor and escaping to surrender to police. Mrs Robbins died next morning and Mrs Smith lay mortally wounded. Coroner ruled the case as inquest verdicts and Smith was jailed awaiting grand jury action.
