In Vienna a Socialist demonstration over high food prices sparked riots. Troops fired on barricaded streets wounding about 50 rioters and arresting 100 as missiles were hurled. The crisis followed the protest against rising essentials costs.
Fifty thousand protesters demand import of foreign meat and foods. A large procession to Parliament cheered for revolution before rioters clashed with troops. Dragoons dispersed mobs. fires, barricades, and street clashes followed in Ottakring. Officials fear serious consequences from months of rising living costs.
Former United States Senator Thomas Henry Carter of Montana dies at 57 from lung infarction. Once head of the Republican National Committee and since March chairman of the American section of the international joint commission, he died at home with Mrs. Carter and their Georgetown students among those present. His career spanned 22 years in congressional and official life in Washington.
Extensive investigations by ex Att y General Herbert Parker and John A Thayer suggest a bill may be introduced in the next Legislature to establish bird sanctuaries across the state. Parker has built the state’s most complete aviary on his Lancaster estate.
Ex-attorney general Mr. Parker advocates large year round sanctuaries in Massachusetts to boost duck populations. He farms finches on his Lancaster estate where northern breeder species thrive in a vast aviary, drawing visitors to observe native-like songbirds in natural settings.
Three Massachusetts aeronauts launched from Pittsfield in the balloon Springfield just before midnight. Dawn found them over New York City as the balloon drifted across the Bronx. They continued toward the Sound and landed at Auburndale in Queensborough after a long flight.
A crossing of the Sound above the Queensborough Bridge was noted for unusually warm waters as the balloon journey continued beyond the page.
A Somerville raid used a motor boat two cars two patrol wagons and 27 officers to bust a craps game on the Mystic flats near Boston and Maine repair shops. Nineteen men and boys were arrested with eighteen charged as present participants and one for taking part in the game. An additional trespassing charge will be added in Somerville Police Court.
The raid was carefully planned by Chief Kendall and executed by squads under Lieutenant Carter, Sergeant Ray, Inspector Damery and Liquor Officer Kennedy. Prisoners were transported to the police station in cars and wagons and admitted to bail immediately.
A blaze sweeps upper floors of a Chauncy Street building prompting a great water curtain attack on an adjoining structure. Streets flood as firefighters battle the flames and contain the danger.
Boston reports claimed actress Edna Goodrich wed Baron Keane, an English sportsman, drawing swift denial from Nat Goodwin, the actor’s father. The press agent glare centers on the sensational rumor and its source.
Mr. Goodwin Sr of 89 St Botolph Street dismisses claims of a wealthy English nobleman groom and a publicized marriage. He states his son has no plans to wed again, noting the son always seeks his mother's consent before any such move.
Boston loses to St Louis in a pair of games with scores 4 0 and a seven inning second game. Chicago defeats Brooklyn twice. Philadelphia sweeps Cincinnati 6 to 7. Cleveland closes its season today. Giants favored for the National League pennant. Cobb narrows the gap on rivals.
Percy Smith aged 17 of East Boston drowned yesterday forenoon when his boat capsized in Boston harbor. John Sullivan age 28 was rescued from the boat’s bottom by Alma E. A. Holmes crewmen John Lindstrom and Andrew Brannksen.
Sullivan and Smith of Atlantic Works, East Boston, were fishing Saturday night when a squall overturned their boat. Smith could not swim and disappeared after both men were drawn under heavy seas. Sullivan survived and was rescued, leaving Smith dead and his mother in shock.
George F. Fitzgerald, brother of the mayor, was taken suddenly ill at Thompson's Spa Saturday and was reported resting comfortably at City Hospital last night with slight improvement. Doctors have not yet formed an exact diagnosis.
A $30,000 fire last evening gutted the two upper floors of a six story brick building at 60 68 Chauncy and 51 Bedford streets. The wholesale lace and fancy goods district faced heavy losses as smoke and water damaged stocks across multiple firms.
A blaze starting on the sixth floor of Colonial Manufacturing Co lace goods and neckwear dealers spread to the rear of the fifth floor housing William B Savage interior decorator and J Arthur Savage upholsterer. Sparks threatened the Jordan Marsh corner as water curtains flashed and hundreds were soaked. The 65 Bedford street rear houses Boston Leather Goods Co and other small firms. the fire risk to upper floors was checked.
A 12 year old was run over and killed by Thomas A Edison s automobile at Lauf near Nuremberg. The chauffeur appears not to be at fault and the party is detained for a hearing tomorrow. Edison may proceed later today.
