Eva F. Jameson, daughter of Ellen E. Jameson, lies near death at her home on 2 Shepard Street after a drug clerk mixed a very strong acid into a prescription two weeks ago. The error occurred when the prescription was filled at a local drug store and was not discovered in time.
Lieutenant Michael J. O'Brien of the Fifth Regular Infantry died in Santiago the War Department reported. Born in Boston he gained notoriety when his captain was court-martialed for assault after disputes over Mrs. O'Brien. O'Brien resigned but was later restored to full standing before the war. He had distinguished service in the China Japan campaign and his report from that conflict was praised.
A. F. R. Crofton, fresh from the Klondike, is jailed on charges of passing a $1200 forged draft three years prior on the First National Bank of Chicago. Police say Crofton and J. Jellett previously passed bogus drafts totaling $12,500 across Chicago Montreal and Winnipeg.
A Kennebec ice man reports this season nearing completion has been the most successful in years. Shipments exceed estimates by several tons and total to be shipped reaches about 152000 tons. Maine coast houses are nearly emptied and a busy winter with ample employment is anticipated.
Grace Marion Perkins of Middleboro Mass disappeared with Charles Bourne three weeks earlier. Her body was found in Yellow Mill Pond Connecticut near Bridgeport. Identification by her father rests on distinct head marks including a forehead scar and a chickenpox mark above the eyebrow.

Governor Bloxham calls all state governors to send delegates to a national convention in Tampa Florida on February 8 1899. The meeting aims to reorganize state militia with focus on arms equipment tactics clothing food transport camp sites sanitation and health use of a display building for army and navy items. Prominent U S military representatives will attend and a circular with full details will follow.
Manila dispatch says several Filipinos claim to have witnessed brutal torture by Spaniards in Iloilo including feet held to candle flame and electric currents applied to sensitive parts to force confessions. Some escaped by bribing officials while Spanish prisoners at Malolos face no maltreatment.
