A Boston canvass of prominent businessmen and leaders from both parties finds strong support for merging surrounding cities and towns into a Greater Boston. They say union would boost commercial life and reduce local government costs through centralization.
A proposal favors a central government coordinating large community interests while preserving town identities. A commission selected by Mayor Fitzgerald, from surrounding towns, should study the problem. The Legislature is expected to consider authorizing such a commission at the session start.
Worcester reporters note Senator Henry Cabot Lodge billed himself as the original advocate of reciprocity with Canada at the Franco American Republican Club of Massachusetts banquet. Speakers included Lieutenant Governor Frothingham and Congressmen Washburn Greene, with Dr L Z Mornandi ra as toastmaster before about 500 attendees.
The Malden Gas Light Company directors announce an initial price drop to 95 cents per 1000 cubic feet from January 1, with a further cut to 90 cents six months later. A cross price of 10 cents per 1000 cubic feet remains. The utility serves Malden Melrose Everett and Medford.

The condition known as catalepsy left her semi conscious for four days and then insensible. She previously endured a five day trance last year and recovered.

Mrs Bessie Faulkner Chapman of Boston mother of the Chapman baby is charged with smuggling gowns after arriving on the Adriatic. Customs find a fake $200 necklace worth $20 000 plus several Paris gowns left undeclared. The case proceeds in court tomorrow.
Mrs Chapman arrived on the Adriatic and customs officers found four foreign made gowns and several jewelry pieces in her trunks beyond the declared value. She was ordered to appear before Deputy Surveyor Smythe to explain the undisclosed items and faces arraignment for attempted smuggling. Her mother vouched the jewelry was bought in New York. There was no engagement to Baron Rothschild.

Charles Dudley Daly former Harvard and West Point football star, yesterday won appointment as fire commissioner by Mayor Fitzgerald. Civil Service Commission approved after a lengthy hesitation that used nearly all of the 30 day review period.
The new fire commissioner replaces the resigned Samuel D. Parker. Francis M. Carroll has acted as commissioner since Parker’s departure. Daly, about 30, is Boston’s youngest ever. Born in Roxbury, he attended Boston Latin School Harvard College and West Point. At Harvard he starred in football and captained the varsity. He joined West Point on Harvard’s recommendation and led Army football against Navy. After graduation he served a year as artillery officer before resigning to become a bond broker in New York. He now works in Boston and lives with his parents in Brighton, unmarried.
