Treasury sees urgent need for large sixes call

Augusta Maine September 15 The muster proved highly successful as drill and discipline impressed many. Afternoon company shoots included Dexter light infantry 393 Biddeford light infantry 638 Auburn light infantry 354 Capitol guards 351 Richards light infantry 393. Over 5000 spectators watched the brigade review by Maj Gen Chamberlain. Artillery practice followed and dress parade closed the day.

Fire alarms and blazes sweep through multiple works

At Cambridge the box 16 alarm reported a roof fire at Ela Brothers turning works causing $20 damage. In Cincinnati a fire at Holtzinger’s picture frame manufactory damaged property valued at $39,000 for the coffin company and $8,000 for Holtzinger’s. several dwellings were crushed by falling wills and fireman John Renner died. In Troy a fire at Bussey & McLean’s stove foundry destroyed $50,000 in property and left 300 workers unemployed.

Dublin convention opens with Parnell chairing and labor ties

Horticultural Exhibition Awards at Horticultural Hall

The horticultural exhibition drew a large Thursday audience at Music hall and Horticultural hall with crowds all day. Awards announced include first place in twelve store and greenhouse foliage plants to L. R. Payson and F. L. Ames, multiple prizes across plant categories, and honors for begonias, dahlias, cut flowers, and various foliage specimens. The event closes Friday night.

Poisoning case at Lancaster linked to whiskey with arsenic

Evidence suggests Dr. Bugbee, Mr. Towne, and Mrs. Towne died from arsenic-laced whiskey used as medicine. Officials express confidence in a guilty party. Senior Boston priest dies after long service in East Boston

The Rev Father Fitton, pastor of the Church of the Holy Redeemer in East Boston, died at 9 AM on Sept 15 at his parochial residence on Maverick street after a period of rheumatic illness. Born in Boston in 1803 to English parents, he was ordained in 1827 and served across New England, founding parishes and schools in Hartford Worcester and Boston before retiring to East Boston where he oversaw three major churches and related institutions. His career linked the old Catholic community through eras of Bishop Cheverus Fenwick Fitzpatrick and Archbishop Williams. He remained active until shortly before his death.
