Ex mayor John F. Fitzgerald returns from New York with Mrs. Fitzgerald and a reporter, discussing the European war, the Olympian games, evils of tipping, and related topics from his European tour. Continued on Page 12 First Column.
Four children from Cambridge streets were bitten by a mad dog and will be sent to the Pasteur Institute in New York for hydrophobia treatment at the city’s expense. Lillian Keefe, Edward Finneran, Mortimer Morgan, and Henry Kenny are named as bite victims after the dog, killed by George Cronin, attacked near Cowperthwaite and Banks streets. The dog’s owner is unknown.
Professor William H. Pickering of Harvard-Say observatory plans a Fitchburg ascent to photograph the earth from a balloon. He will carry a camera and a sextant to take observations for longitude and latitude calculations.
Despite recent advances in hard coal prices, Otto Coke maintains summer schedule and offers stove and nut sizes for range use. Prices cited at about 2.25 dollars or 45 percent higher than Otto Coke. Fans of coal alternative asked to buy by bag or by half ton, with agents available if dealers lack stock.
Rev. returns from 468 of 519 towns show Fernald 72 117 Gardner 64 993 with 51 towns to hear from. Fernald wins by about 7 700 votes including missing towns. Republicans also sweep four Congress seats and many county offices amid push for prohibition resubmission and State Grange support.
Fire at Crossman's box factory in Saco Maine raged from 1 AM and overwhelmed the lumber district. Fire spread to yards and wooden buildings with aid from Portland Dover Biddeford and Portsmouth. Loss estimated at 200000 with Crossman yards worth 25000 and factory 75000 destroyed. a million feet of lumber burned, damaging 18 tenements and threatening Saco River Lumber Co and J W Beaty Co plants.
Flames escape from the Crossman factory breaching the telephone office and cutting city communication. Telegraph trunk lines fail, Boston & Maine tracks are blocked, and a freight car blaze threatens a bridge. Fire jumps Market and Lincoln streets before Portland engines arrive to halt further spread.
Wind spared Biddeford a disaster comparable to Saco as fire raged near the Diamond Match Company yards across the river. Fire engines stood by and bucket brigades fought sparks from dry piles until flames fell into the river when the wind subsided.
Boston's elevated subway system halted for over two hours after a cable power cutoff stopped the third rail. Thousands were stranded as trains halted, lights flickered, and workers searched for a short circuit before some cars moved briefly before power failed again.
In a woolly contest Boston scores twice to defeat New York 2 to 1. Athletics and Washington split a double header leaving Boston even with Philadelphia in the American League. Browns beat Detroit 5 to 2 as Cleveland and Chicago White Sox chase. Harvard opens 1908 football practice with 45 men reported.
