Advices from London say a powerful hurricane struck Barbados in the Windward Islands. Up to two hundred people were killed and 40,000 rendered homeless as residents faced widespread destruction and displacement.
Returns from 411 towns and plantations cut Powers Republican lead to about 24 000. Powers 51 573, Lord 27 751, a 23 822 plurality. Up-country districts show large Republican losses between 40 and 50 percent, while Democratic losses are smaller, with Somerset and other districts reflecting shifting support.
