Massachusetts Farm Weather Brings Drought and Tobacco Hope
The 1882 spring was cool and dry then wet, with May growth boosting hay prospects. A severe midsummer drought scorched crops from corn to potatoes, pasture grass turning brown, and lawn areas dying. Tobacco proved more drought resistant, though late and needing care, with some yields below average due to high labor and pests.

Valid excursion tickets must be used by end date per contract
The New York Tribune reviews a court of appeals decision on excursion tickets. Mr. Auerbach used a Buffalo to New York ticket by September 26, 1877, and was allowed to finish his journey after punching the ticket on the 26th. The ruling holds such tickets permit completion of travel begun within the stated period, not additional fare after expiry.
