Slocum letter favors Johnson policy on suffrage and civil law
Major General H W Slocum writes from Vicksburg August 31 1865 to John A Green Jr of Syracuse endorsing President Johnsons approach to allowing Southern states to decide who may vote. He advocates returning promptly to civil government, reducing national debt, civil courts, and constitutional rights for states and individuals. He reserves consideration of a nomination for Secretary of State and asks Green to proceed with caution if the platform shifts.
