On September 12 mobs attacked downtown Buenos Aires destroying German business houses on Calle 25 de Mayo and burning the German Club and La Union building. Demonstrators also stoned the German legation and newspaper offices as mounted police charged crowds in Avenida Florida.
London report shows the smallest number of large ships sunk by mines or submarines since U boat warfare began. Tonnage indicates a roughly 33 percent decrease from the prior week’s sinkings.
Last week 12 ships over 1600 tons were sunk, down from 20 the prior week. The smaller class saw six losses, with the larger vessels averaging about 3000 tons and the smaller around 1000 tons, totaling roughly 42 000 tons versus 63 000 in the preceding week.
Provisions for monthly allowances to dependents during service were tentatively approved by the House. Dependents could receive from 5 to 50 dollars monthly, plus up to 15 dollars from enlisted men’s pay, with specific amounts listed for wife, children, motherless child, parents, and other dependents. Special rules cover divorced wives.
Sofia reports the death of Queen Eleonore of Bulgaria this afternoon after a period of illness. King Ferdinand the crown prince and Prince Cyril were summoned to her bedside.

Secretary Baker described how top brains and industry across American motordom pooled knowledge and inventions to produce the Liberty motor. The engine, he said, would power thousands of American airplanes in missions over Germany, reflecting a united wartime effort and rapid industrial mobilization.
George A. Rooney a 14 year old errand boy from 4 Dix street Dorchester was struck and killed by a car on Beacon street near Maitland. Ernest Tatro 20 of Jamaica Plain drove the vehicle and rushed Rooney to Scobey Hospital where he died. Tatro was arrested by Back Bay police and charged with manslaughter with bail set at 1000 dollars.
Nine other Americans were wounded when bombs from German air raiders killed Lieuten ant Fitzsimmons and three privates of the medical corps in a hospital back of the lines in France last week. A list from General Pershing shows two severely hurt First Class Private Allen Mason of Boston and Private Aubrey S. McLeod of Marlboro Mass. Others suffered moderate wounds: Rae W. Whidden Neenah Wis Thaddeus D. Smith Kansas City Mo Clarence A. McGuire Kansas City Mo Elmer C. Sloan Elwood Ind John F. Stanton Hyde Park Mass Nurse Eva Parmalee unknown address and Private Hiram P. Brewer Cambridge Mass. All wounded belong to the Medical Corps.
Federal authorities raided Professor Scott Nearing's Toledo home as part of an investigation into literature alleged to oppose the army conscription law. Officers also searched the Industrial Workers of the World headquarters. Nearing, a lecturer on socialist topics, moved to Toledo from the University of Pennsylvania two years ago.
No arrests were reported at either place as important documents were seized. Professor Nearing attended the September 3 meeting in Chicago as part of the People's Council of America and Terms of Peace and was named to the national executive committee. He had left Toledo University over alleged unpatriotic remarks and has since lectured and led a locally organized socialist church society.
Boston volunteers are asked to knit olive drab sweaters without necks and large socks for the 301st Infantry Regiment at Camp Devens. Women and girls may mail completed items to Colonel Frank Tompkins, commander, 301st Infantry, Camp Devens, Ayer.
Russian provisional government claims rebel forces have collapsed with widespread support from all quarters. Kerensky accuses Korniloff's troops of desertion and brands rebel leaders as traitors.
News from Petrograd reports Korniloff forces occupy Gatchina near Petrograd and push toward Tsarskoe Selo, while Korniloff loyalists face court action as rebels. Provisional government leaders, including Kerensky, express confidence the revolt is collapsing and followers are deserting.

John Lamont aged 60, a fireman aboard the steamship Sardinia, slipped from the gangplank while boarding at Hoosao Tunnel dock late last night and fell into the water after striking the vessel. Robert Samuelson, another fireman on the same ship, jumped in to help but could not find him.
A hidden dynamite cache was unearthed at Devens near Ay er Camp by Captain H M Bowen of the Department of Justice. Location details were not disclosed, but the cache was close to the cantonment headquarters and caused DOJ activity and a sensation among investigators.
The discovery occurred two days after I W W members were detected attempting to gain workman roles at the cantonment. The recovered explosive differed in quality and make from prior materials used in construction.
Police arrested Henry Reed of 627 Massachusetts avenue after he attempted to cash a $6 on a $100 check across East Boston stores. His scheme began at C. T. Foley Company on Bennington street where he sought $94 of furniture and claimed it would be sent to his store using a Chelsea grocer’s name. A subsequent confession and investigation revealed similar actions at another weekend store.

Washington Sept. 12 Drafting of all aliens in the United States except Germans exempt by treaty and those allied with Germany who have resided here one year is proposed in a joint Senate resolution sent to the House. It is estimated more than one million aliens would be affected.
Senator Chamberlain of Oregon argues for a resolution to allow allied and neutral aliens claiming treaty exemption to leave the country within 90 days. He cites draft inequities from alien exemptions and notes McCumber's failed resolution to authorize drafting aliens. Lodge criticizes the administration. no record vote. Amendments would permit using German aliens for non military work, credit future drafts for excessive exemptions, and protect Americans who joined the Allies from expatriation.
Major General Pershing issued a war faith message through the New York Bible Society to soldiers. The note urges trust in God amid hardship and temptation, calling on servicemen to show valor and honorable conduct as examples to comrades and country.
