Progress on Tariff Is Rapid in Bipartisan Conference

Democratic conferees from the Senate and House report rapid progress on the tariff bill. They approve earthenware, glass, sugar with free sugar, tobacco, wood, and agricultural schedules, but leave banana tax and wheat countervailing duty unsettled and defer some rate changes in liquor and brandy provisions. The ferro manganese and steel items remain a dispute with possible revenue concerns.

Steamer Georgia Disabled Off Narragansett Bay

More than 100 passengers on the Bay State line steamer Georgia returning to Providence after its steering gear failed off Despair Island near Warwick Neck. The Tennessee rescued the disabled ship’s passengers and returned them to Providence where they demanded rail transport to New York. An indignation meeting was held on the dock, and a Boston committee was appointed to represent the travelers in action against the company.

Dispute Over Baby Body Splits Newark Family

In Newark and Irvington police guard the line dividing home of Allen Krichman as the seven month old baby's body sits inside. Krichman and his separated wife plan burial in different cemeteries with neighbors split in support. Kriechman tried to enter to move the body to a different cemetery prompting police involvement.

San Francisco reports no bubonic plague epidemic. Dr. J D Long states the Martinez death was sporadic and notes another case in San Benito involving a Japanese strawberry picker. Death From Plague Reported in California

A Martinez resident died of bubonic plague confirmed by Dr. D. H. Curry at the Federal Laboratory Service. The State Board of Health said the Federal government would add forty thousand dollars to the plague fight. Dr. J. D. Long of the U S Marine Hospital Service in San Francisco verified the diagnosis.

In Malden yesterday John Wesley Ulm of Chicago and Susan Alicia Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs Benjamin Johnson of 14 Oxford street married at the bride’s home in a quiet ceremony attended by close relatives. Burgess Plans Foreign Airship Studies

W Starling Burgess of Marblehead sails to Europe with Mrs Burgess to study the latest flying machines. From Hamburg he travels to France to inspect an aeroplane flown upside down and then visits Aldershot and Farnborough to observe English aircraft. He expects to deliver four new army aeroplanes and four hydroplanes to the U S government within the month.
