Sugar Trust in Court Over Refined Business injunction sought
The New York Supreme Court heard Attorney General Knowlton seek a preliminary injunction against the American Sugar Refining Company known as the Sugar Trust to halt its business until it files a financial return with the corporation commissioner and pays forfeitures under 1891 and 1894 laws. The case combines a pending appeal from a July ruling and a new bill under a 1900 act allowing daily forfeitures and injunctions. the sugar trust argues the first would prejudice an appeal and the second is unconstitutional ex post facto. The judge took the pleas under advisement and may notify counsel before granting an injunction to allow the company to file its return and continue operations if feasible.
