Nighttime Shootings Reported in Several Cities

In Plainfield New Jersey early Saturday a colored coachman named John Johnson killed Samuel Williams during a quarrel over his sister in law and was arrested. In Providence Rhode Island Mrs. Jennie Reynolds wounded Patrick Farley in a house quarrel and was seized. In Illinois Lewis Butler, a colored ex convict, died from a back wound after a fight and Denis McSweeney was arrested for murder. In Rockford Ed Regan was shot by a night watchman after a street disturbance. the coroner cleared the watchman of blame.

Two Workmen Die After Lamp Fight at Foundry Dock

In Chicago two unloading workers, William Doyle and Timothy Connell, quarreled at the Union Steel Foundry dock on Ashland Avenue. They seized kerosene lamps and, after cursing, hurled them at each other. The lamps ignited, both men were badly burned, Doyle died, Connell in critical condition.

Former bank official arrested for $50,000 embezzlement

Philadelphia report says Joseph Tapson, ex secretary of the Provident Savings Bank of London, was detained on charges of misappropriating deposits over four to five years amounting to about 50000 dollars. He initially denied identity but confessed after police confirmation. He is slated for a hearing before the United States Commissioner tomorrow.

J M Wimley and James Millis journeyed through Evansville en route to Somerset where Wimley’s brother is held under death sentence for the alleged murder of Millis who vanished from Somerset fourteen years ago and was found missing until Wimley located him near Ford s Ferry Kentucky last Saturday.

Bottling driver crashes into children injuring group and an elderly man

William Duffy, a bottling plant driver, drove drunkenly through a street crowd in Wilmington. He ran over Isaiah M. West, 80, crushing the chest and breaking ribs. West cannot live. Two children are seriously hurt and several more slightly injured.

Chicago test races award prizes to men and horses

In Chicago on September 12 the men claimed the first, fourth and fifth prizes in the 156 hour test races with Byrne 578, Krohne 535, Colston 529 leading the men. From Jacksonville a survivor John Connell, a coal passer, tells of the Vera Cruz wreck on August 27. He describes lifeboat drift, raft escapes, and aid from New Smyrna residents before landing ashore twelve miles below the wreck site. President Hayes Receives Address from Evicted Settlers in San Francisco

In San Francisco on September 12 the President and Mrs Hayes attended church at the First Methodist. Bishop Simpson, temporarily in the city, suffered a convulsive chill during his sermon and was taken to a nearby house with improved condition later. Settlers from Fresno, Musselsboro, and Tulare counties presented an address to Hayes on the land eviction dispute with the Southern Pacific Company and urged him to visit Hanford and review the case now in U S Court. The President pledged to act for the settlers within his constitutional powers.

Tin Can Factory Fire at Baltimore Assails Large Plant

Baltimore witnesses a major blaze at the Smith & Wicks tin can factory on Bowly and Mill streets. The one story brick mill, 250 by 60 feet, employing 350 to 400 workers, suffered extensive damage with losses over 50 thousand dollars and priceless stock destroyed.
