Desperate New Yorker on Death Steamer Mass Shooting

Elisha Tibbetts, 60, of 1 West 136th Street New York, killed himself on a Massachusetts steamship early Tuesday morning. He had boarded under the alias J C Tobie and was identified later at North Grove Street morgue by John Kazro who lived with him. Tibbetts, a salesman for the Pension Envelope Company of Newark, left Monday noon claiming a Boston business trip. the body will be cremated and buried here.

Kosher Meat Price Jumps Reported in 1918

The first real 1918 rise in kosher meat prices was recorded with all grades up 2 to 4 cents per pound. Retail prices moved from 20 to 26 cents to 22 to 28 cents per pound, with expectations that prices will climb further into spring. Jewish butchers say demand for cheaper cuts remains weak as higher costs spread through the market.

Stowaway Jumps Overboard Near Baltimore

A Spanish stowaway, fearing imprisonment, jumped from the British steamer Tania near Baltimore as the ship neared the port. Officers fear he was drowned about three miles from shore. The man was found in coal bunkers ten hours after the Tafna cleared Huelva on August 23.

Cambridge Youth Accuses Girls of Robbery in New York

Seventeen year old Allen B. Croke of 36 Garfield street Cambridge returns from New York in custody of Inspector James Conboy claiming he was drugged and robbed after leaving with 853.50 of his employer's money on Aug 2. He says in Brooklyn a party of chorus girls dined with him then he was robbed of 550, a diamond ring and a gold watch before being abandoned. He was held in 2000 bail for trial.

Auto Delivery Driver Loosened Traffic On Beacon Street Bridge

Two hundred passengers and fourteen elevated cars were halted for over an hour on the Boston & Albany bridge on Beacon street near Mountford street after a delivery truck rode astride a water pipe to avoid a collision with a car on the wrong side of the street. The McGreenery and Manning vehicle swerved to the right, rode the pipe, and the driver sped away while the blocked cars watched.
