President C S Mellen telegraphed the Boston Post denying any plan to retire as head of the New Haven road. He said no date is fixed and he will stay as long as his health strength and board permit.
Rumors in New Haven spread that Charles S. Mellen may retire as president of the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad. Official statements from New Haven say retirement is possible but date is unsettled, with Mr Mellen later saying no formal announcement has been made. Robert F. Fowler, first to attempt the William R. Hurst prize flight, rode favorable Pacific winds from coast to coast and landed at 6:36 PM in Auburn California after a brief stop in Sacramento. He aims to reach the Sierra summits as part of the transcontinental bid.
