From the Buffalo Courier Sept 10 a leading New York paper argues Massachusetts Republicans should nominate Henry L Pierce for governor. Despite Butler's strong record as governor and apparent GOP unity there is belief his defeat will not be easy. The Republicans must marshal full strength, and no effort will be spared even if less could have sufficed to win.
Eugene McCarthy, 24, a Somerville pedler, was arrested after a late Tuesday assault at Henry Wallace's Cambridge Street liquor store. He stabbed Thomas Callahan, a 30 year old bartender, twice in the neck with a knife, severing the jugular area nearly. Callahan lay critically wounded as McCarthy fled toward Somerville and was captured at Perkins Street. Callahan's prognosis remained grave, while McCarthy, a one legged cripple, was found intoxicated at the station.
Henry G Blessing, an engineer at 1451 Cass avenue in St Louis, fired on his brother in law injuring him fatally, then shot his wife twice, and an hour later cut his throat from ear to ear but survived. All three were hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities suspect jealousy as a motive.

Weirs New Hampshire September 11 The New Hampshire Veterans opened camp under favorable conditions with about 1,000 veterans on the grounds and nearly 8,000 visitors arriving by boats and trains. Delegations arrived for the reception of Grand Army posts and visiting veterans as camp fires were lit this evening and veterans shared stories of the war.
