Military recruiting and public amusements update

A cavalry squadron for a new regiment forms in the city with two companies totaling 190 men. The Union regiment under Col. Taylor nears 500 men and may depart for Fort Warren this week. Recruiting is rapid with 2nd Massachusetts sharpshooters awaiting orders, and Capt Follett’s Battery is full. Public amusements include the Howard Athenaeum season opening, Planche’s new comedy at the Museum, and Gilmore’s promenade concert featuring the Cuckoo Polka.
