The War Industries Board announced a new Priorities classification that will not bind district draft boards. Boards may defer on occupational grounds only if they determine the industry is necessary and the individual registrant is essential to that industry.
Allied forces push on the Hindenburg Line Southwest of Cambrai while French troops advance toward La Fere and close on Laon flank. Heavy artillery duels and massed guns mark the push as the center of the line remains near St. Quentin.
German forces stiffen resistance from Arras to Rheims while Allied pressure increases. Across the front big guns roar and machine guns man the lines. The British dig in southwest of Cambrai, seize positions on a four mile front between Havrincourt Wood and Pieziere, regain Gouzencourt trench lines, and capture Gouzencourt Wood.
Provost Marshal General Crowder disclosed plans for a more liberal occupational exemption scheme in classifying new registrants. He released the amended draft regulations and a supplement to the questionnaire explaining how registrants should note facts related to their classification.
Former Lt Allan Gail Steingardt pleaded guilty at the East Cambridge Supreme Court after withdrawing an earlier plea on polygamy charges. The case was continued for sentence until next Thursday. Steingardt married Marion Ruth Dillon on June 15 at Camp Devens while serving as a lieutenant. learning his first wife was alive led to his arrest and a dishonorable discharge.
The Middlesex & Boston Street Railway car men strike ended after an all day hearing at the State House. Arbitrator Henry B. Endicott of the Massachusetts Committee on Public Safety ordered wage increases averaging two cents an hour due to the rising cost of living.
Officials and workers agree no strikes during the war with cases to be settled by the National War Labor Board or Mr. Endicott. Endicott finds Middlesex & Boston loss but fixes wages to meet rising living costs. Blue uniform workers rise to 35 37 39 41 42 cents. car control 35 cents. other employees 3812 cents or 40 cents within ranges. effective retroactive to July 1.
Reserve Officer Joseph O Connell and Patrolman Thomas Foley of Joy Street station were injured in a rear end collision in the tunnel between Bowdoin and Scollay squares. Both patrolmen were treated and sent home after the 5 o clock crash as investigators review the cause.

In Maine on September 9 Democrats cut into Republican votes but failed to seize power. Governor Carl L. Milliken trailed U. S. Senator Bert M. Fernald and all four Republican congressmen were reelected.
From 5623 of 636 precincts Milliken leads McIntire by 56 071 to 50 995 with possible final margin near 7 000 votes. Ferriald tops Newhbert 61 668 to 49 626 for senate while Goodall trails Swett 15 416 to 47 361 in the first district.

The Italian Red Cross began a statewide drive to enroll 100 000 Massachusetts members each pledging one. Launching from North End Public Library in Boston the drive runs to September 23 with rallies led by prominent Italian speakers. Miss Louise De Ferrari of Brookline chairs the effort assisted by about a thousand volunteers. On opening night several thousand dollars were pledged.
Thousands of male residents in New England aged 18 to 45 must appear before district draft boards on Thursday to register in the selective draft. Officials urge quick action as the process is described as simple as pulling a book from the public library, with continued coverage on Page 56.
