Cottages Dynamited to Check Flames at Salisbury Beach
A massive fire at Salisbury Beach destroyed dozens of cottages and hotels as dynamite was used to create fire breaks. The blaze began in a photographer’s gallery and swept along the north and south ends, leaving hundreds homeless and prompting aid from Newburyport Portsmouth and Haverhill. Firefighter efforts failed to stop the flames until dynamite opened gaps. Casualties included two women found unconscious on the hotel floor. rescue crews fought through the night amid ruined beach life and scarce supplies.
