First big cutting case for new Station 1 chief Hoffman

Captain Hoffman handled a Saturday night stabbing case leaving one man in custody charged with knife assault and battery with two others injured in hospital. The arrested suspect is Fred J Barton eight of Somerville. Police hunt another man last known to be at large.

Daredevil Harbor Escape Averted by Duchesse Captain

The La Grande Duchesse narrowly avoided a collision with a racing yacht off Boston when Captain Hanlon swiftly steered away as the smaller craft tacked in front. The steamer carried 400 passengers bound for Halifax, while the other vessel appeared to lose several planks in the skirmish. A detachment of the Halifax Fusiliers and a fife and drum corps were among the passengers, and the crowd saluted with a performance of Ben Bolt as the Duchesse cleared the area.

Hon J B Eustis Dies in Newport After Illness

James B. Eustis former ambassador to France and Louisiana senator died at his Newport summer home at 8 PM after pneumonia followed a brief illness. Doctors warned of heart trouble earlier and a Friday consultation confirmed a grave prognosis. His son James B. Eustis Jr and daughter Celeste were at his bedside.

Saloon Row Leaves Two Wounded In Boston Amid Knife Fight

In a street brawl starting in front of a Fleet and Commercial street saloon, Bartholomew Ryan 27 of 218 Commercial and John Stewart 22 of Whitler's were wounded. Stewart has a severe abdominal cut and is not expected to live. Ryan bears a bad knife wound and is at City Hospital. Burton, seized by officers with a knife, is identified as the other assailant. Stewart remains in serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital.
