Henry E. Searle of Australia won the Thames race over four miles and three furlongs against William OConnor, the U S and Canada champion, by six lengths in 22 minutes 42 seconds. OConnor led early but faded after the first mile. spectators packed the Surrey side as Searle took the lead and finished strong. Odds earlier favored OConnor at 21 to 20, then 5 to 4 against Searle. the start was at 1:28 with favorable, windy conditions and a largely well-kept course.
In Ottawa Sept 9 British publishers oppose the Dominion Parliament copyright bill as a Berne violation and threaten to block reprints from foreign works. An English Copyright Association delegation investigates the issue, arguing the measure grants Canadian privileges at British and foreign authors expense and may harm Canada’s publishing industry.
The Newport Republicans renominated Thomas Coggeshall for mayor while Colonel S. K. Honey was named by Democrats. Ex Alderman Edward Newton also runs. A meeting of colored citizens endorsed Newton and pledged to bolt the R party to back him. The city election is next Wednesday with a lively contest. The Yorktown and Chicago will debut their speed trials tomorrow.
Enquirer Sun report from Salem Alabama says W A Haff the would be duelist and his companion Captain Roft Sims of Macon were arrested this afternoon. They were taken to Opelika and presented before a judge. Haff is bound to keep the peace for ten thousand dollars and Sims for twenty five hundred. Both are in custody. Patterson the other duelist remains at large.
News from New York reports Congressman S. Cox of New York is critically ill at his home after a four day fever that developed into acute pneumonia. Doctors warn the next hours will decide recovery. The public mourns a widely loved, independent Democrat known for humor and reasoned debate. Mrs. Cox reports a slight rally, but officials remain cautious.
A pile of grease saturated material on the third story ignited in J McArdle's rag and general paper stock warehouse. Fourteen women and ten men jumped from windows as flames raced through the building. Several workers suffered broken bones, burns, and injuries. one bookkeeper died from inhalation of flames. Loss estimated at 80000 dollars, insured. Separately in St John New Brunswick forest fires damaged timber lands, sent bears to water, and halted river navigation and steamers between St John and Fredericton.
Major Thomas J. Pierce of Orange dies of paralysis at an advanced age. Born February 3, 1806 in West Boylston, he was a Mason Universalist, a Boston Lancer major, and a substantial Boston Ice Company stockholder. Burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Samuel Graves of Lebanon Kentucky Standard and Times dies of blood poisoning at 37, a prominent journalist. Ephraim B. Thompson of Halifax Mass dies at 75, former state legislator and longtime local official, served as assistant assessor of internal revenue after the war.
The Bricklayers' Union met at 43 Eliot Street and called off seven men from William Barrett's Falmouth Street building due to Barrett using non union stone and advertising for non union cutters. They plan to buy 100 copies of the labor measures report naming legislators who voted against them. Pattern makers met in Blatchford Hall and set a public meeting for next Monday evening. The national body's general secretary treasurer reported a new branch in Cincinnati.
