Dorchester War Meeting Reports Subscriptions and Enlistments

Dorchester held a war meeting chaired by H A Scudder to review recruiting and subscriptions. The town quota was 244, with 253 credited, $54,452 spent though $36,000 came from subscriptions. Fifty seven substitutes served three years. 20 residents went. Naval enlistments totaled seven. 57 men served varied terms. Gilmore's Band played. a Meeting House Hill salute honored recent victories at Atlanta and Fort Morgan. Residences of Swan Eaton and Eben Robinson were illuminated. A McClellan Club formed in Ward 1 elected officers led by Joseph M Wightman with a full slate of officers and committees.

Mass 3d Battery to Reach Boston for Reception

The Mass 3d Battery is expected in Boston this morning with city authorities set to greet them. Charlestown troops will be escorted to their city later. Capt. Dexter H. Follett, former commander, named special aid by the Governor to represent the unit.

Burglary at Commercial Bulletin Office and Adjacent Stores

Thieves burglarized the upper story rooms of the Commercial Bulletin at 129 Washington street on Wednesday night. They ransacked the office without taking editorial items and then entered rear stores of Joseph Ward and Joseph L Bates through side windows. Watches and other goods valued around $100 were taken from Joseph Gardner, a watchmaker in Bates's building.

Washington Insurance Company declares six percent semi annual dividend

The Washington Insurance Company holds assets of six hundred thousand dollars and has paid two hundred thousand dollars to stockholders since starting its participation system. It distributes three fourths of profits to participating customers and maintains a sixty percent scrip dividend for the last three years. Mr Thomas H. Newell of State Street acts as local agent.

Boston Board of Trade Names Committee on Revenue Stamps

At the monthly meeting a committee of Hamilton A. Hill Ezra Farnsworth Joseph M. Wightman Joseph S. Ropes and Albert Fearing was appointed to study the Internal Revenue Law as it relates to stamping freight receipts and to consult railroad managers. Mr J Russell Bradford was elected delegate to The Council of the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science in York England to act for the Board in International General Average.

Sailor Rescued After Overboard Jump at East Boston

Henry Keen, a sailor aboard the U S ship Connecticut, leapt overboard Thursday night while near McKay's wharf in East Boston. Exhausted, he was aided by a watchman to reach the wharf and was returned to the ship the following day.

Return from Labrador on Brad ford’s yacht voyage

The schooner B. S. Wright chartered by Brad ford the artist has returned after three months at Labrador. The trip yielded pleasant memories and Brad ford collected numerous sketches and photographs of icebergs and Labrador life and scenery.

Rates Up Five Pilotage Rates In Boston

Following the Boston Marine Society recommendation the Governor and the Council authorize a nineteen percent increase in pilotage rates set before September first. The new rate will take effect in four weeks.

Nineteen recruits were accepted at headquarters in Faneuil Hall yesterday and sixteen were rejected by the examining surgeon.

From Gen Grant's headquarters dated Sept 6 reports quiet on the center line with rain and wind. Rebels alleged but disputed, including a tale of Hood retaking Atlanta and a dog trick. colored recruits arrived but rebels shelled them before muster. Hancock's brigade moved left to deter rebel fortification while daily infantry arrivals and steady army health maintained.

Plot to Destroy the Sound Steamer Network

New London reports a week of great excitement over a suspected plot to destroy Sound steamboats. The Electric Spark was named as the agent, with Tallahassee also linked to activity near Newport. Four gunboats reinforced the Sound as details emerge from Collector Barney.

Steamers Reach Cairo as Cotton Seized by Authorities

From the Lower Mississippi Cairo reports Arthur from New Orleans and Belle from Memphis arriving. Military authorities seize two hundred fifty bales of cotton for alleged shipment irregularities. In river fighting a steamer was fired upon and another towed to safety. Reports of Polignac crossing to Rodney and Cortinas battle near Victorias. Generals Hurlbut and Totten reach New Orleans as cotton trading stays inactive.

Capture of Federal Gunboats and Rebel Raid Report

Reports from Helena confirm rebel capture of gunboats Hastings and Naumkeag below Clarendon on the White River with Captain Rogers killed. A gunboat sunk in St Charles River and Duval's Bluff threatened. Cavalry under Mower moves toward White River. infantry to Duval's Bluff. Also notes hay losses and road damage from a raid near Little Rock and 18 of 24 Mississippi Regiment killed at Redwood near Baton Rouge.

Lincoln's Armistice Stance and Draft Policy Described

A Washington despatch reports the President said an armistice granted to the rebels would only acknowledge their independence. He noted enlistments at about 1000 daily and urged continuing this pace while enforcing draft in underperforming districts. He proposed free cotton trade for those paying in greenbacks, with all cotton shipped via New York.
