Two Yachts Lose Sprits In Gloucester Race

In East Gloucester on September 7 two Gloucester Yacht Club boats suffered damaged bowsprits. The Tid N. lost hers in the morning triangle race while the Lila M. was crippled by a squall in the afternoon. The morning contest was praised. the afternoon race was windier and improved over the morning.

Oarsmen Battle in Bad Water at Labor Day Regatta

The New England Amateur Rowing Association regatta on the Charles River Basin faced rough winds and chop. Winners included Waltham Canoe Club in tandem canoes and the Crescent club led in several events, with Waltham also taking the club fours. Notable performances saw W. French set a new single paddle canoe record and Belfast–style finishes in multiple races.

Search for bodies fails after harbor and life-saving crew sweep

Rescue teams from the harbor police and U S life-saving station at City Point scoured mid channel to Castle and Governor's islands but found no sign of eight year old Winfield Bradshaw or 20 year old Fred Butterfield who drowned when the Violet dory capsized. The search will resume today as the Guardian and Watchman patrols join. The Bradshaw family is recovering at home in Medford and Harold Brooks, owner of the Violet, is receiving ongoing medical care in South Boston.

Rioting broke out in Providence Illinois across the chief Italian colony tonight marking the third such disturbance in nine days. About a half mile of store windows were broken and more than twenty arrests were made.

Rioters were injured but did not seek hospitals fearing custody. About two hundred policemen including a mounted squad halted the riot within minutes by arresting alleged leaders. Revolvers and weapons were found on several prisoners. The outbreak began as a protest against food price rises linked to the war. police attributed further disturbances to a lawless element. The trouble started when a crowd from an I W W meeting stoned store windows.

Ferkla Dobrowolska, 18, was struck and killed by a west bound train a mile east of Newmarket New Hampshire while returning from berry picking. She had saved 70 in her clothes from mill earnings since arriving six months ago from Poland.

Seattle Washington September 7 The steam ship Isthmian on the way to New York will carry 500 tons of spruce wood pulp from British Columbia to the Atlantic coast marking the first BC pulp shipment to the Atlantic and signaling many more to follow.

Glover Defeats Flemming in New England Welter Title Bout

Mike Glover of South Boston defeated Bill Flemming of Old Town in six rounds in Augusta Maine. Flemming was knocked down and mauled, with fans and Glover’s seconds near stopping the bout. More than 159 spectators attended the New England welter title contest.

Boston Bowling Club Defeats Hartford For New England Title

The Boston Bowling Green Club beat the Hartford Bowling Club 50 to 26 at Franklin Park in a championship match. Boy Rescues Dog Then Is Run Down by Transit Car

A Taunton boy walking with his dog on Washington Street saved the animal from an approaching electric car but was struck while stepping into the road. He suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries and was carried to the Massachusetts School for Cripples by an automobile owned by Alfred D. Foster of the New England Mutual Insurance.
