Prohibition workers in Auburn Maine plan unique methods to persuade voters at the upcoming election. Child singers will perform as no vote winners, and boosters will offer free lunches, auto rides, anti license placards, and fervent door to door exhortations at polling booths.
Autos and floats with prohibition mottoes will lead several hundred children through Auburn to polling places while voters vote. Campaign songs will be sung by children directed by Miss Mary French of the Auburn Women’s Christian Temperance Union during the 9 AM to 4 PM voting period.
At Winonia Camps on Messalonskee Lake two miles east of Belgrade station a shooting left Maude A. Burrill dead and William J. Brooks critically wounded. Brooks was placed under arrest at the camp after the incident and charged with firing the shots.
Mrs. Burrill and her employee Brooks quarrel after a camp supply trip. Brooks shot Burrill’s partner in the camp business, Albert Jack, and both were wounded. Burrill died, while Brooks lay fatally wounded and under arrest as police investigate the deaths.
Miss Florence Rowe, 27, of Peabody died after taking carbolic acid by mistake while seeking tincture of rhubarb for cramps. Dr. Pinkham found signs of acid on her lips and noted no violence. Funeral held at Lakeside Cemetery amid speculation of an exhumation for further autopsy.
Leon Spain September 7 two foreigners detained with a basket holding a Mona Lisa believed recovered from the Louvre theft. They claimed the painting was a copy and said they were taking it to Coimbra where they reside.
Two men were seen taking baggage from a car at an inn on the city outskirts. A observer glimpsed a painting through a cover and believed it to be the Mona Lisa. Authorities arrested the suspects, who gave the names Henri Barbusse and Letellier, and seized the painting.
Fifteen people were driven from their homes at 1 and 2 Chelsea court East Boston early this morning as fire destroyed both houses. Firefighters battled the blaze with difficulty preventing spread. Mr and Mrs Joseph Peters on the first floor of 2 Chelsea court barely escaped with their children, Peters sustaining slight burns. The fire jumped to the adjacent home where Mr and Mrs John Silva and their family needed police help to escape through smoke and flames.

In Chesterfield Court House Virginia on September 7 observers say Henry Clay Beattie Jr. is unlikely to be convicted for his wife’s murder. Jurors may return a disagreement as prosecutors anticipate an eye witness from the West but defense lawyers expect acquittal or only a possible hung verdict.
Attorney Hill Carter pleaded for Beattie for five hours in a hot courtroom as Harry M. Smith Jr for the defense and L C Wendenburg for the Commonwealth prepare for tomorrow’s clash. A verdict is expected before night.
