Keeper Shaw reports two small bonfires extinguished yesterday and witnessed boys starting a third near the mound that exploded. A lighted cigarette or cigar through a ventilating shaft to the magazine is a leading theory, with external flame deemed more plausible than an interior source. Shaw notes locked doors to the vault would hinder access, making a quick entry unlikely.
Gunpowder blast on Governor's Island, Boston Harbor, killed at least one man and badly injured seven others, with two boys missing and numerous injuries among over a hundred visitors. Survivors describe a volcanic plume and flying debris as rock and masonry rained down, while authorities secure the scene and search for the missing Wakefield and Colton.
