Galveston dispatch reports that the Daily News claims the Texas school fund was defrauded of about 12,459,563 acres worth $25,000,000 over the last decade. It cites constitutional allotments and public domain disposals to show the shortfall from expected land holdings and unpaid allocations.
Sweetwater county sheriff has taken 22 alleged leaders into custody including Isaiah Whitehouse and will hold a preliminary hearing tomorrow. In Chattanooga Tennessee on September 7 a night of violence left Williams hanged in the jail at 2 A M. William T Nancy prominent man shot during the melee died this morning. Ben Palmer, a black man shot, is gravely wounded and may die. The ex-chief of police’s remains will be buried today. Authorities note the outbreak could have been avoided if not for the black population.
Bangor Maine September 7 1900 committee members King Strickland awarded premiums for trotting stock stallions and gentlemen driving horses. East Stallion raising honors went to Fearnaught Jr owned by E L Norcross and Black Pilot owned by Gen J Y Richards with 19 points each. Third went to Dr Franklin owned by Lawrence and Gerald with 12 points. Conteslation owned by Gen W S Tilton took first for raising gentlemen driving horses, with Fred Lothair owned by J T Muanoe and Von Moltke owned by G A Novle sharing second with 9 points each.
The Memphis district cotton crop report due tomorrow notes a bleak outlook from hot dry weather injuring crops across four states. Arkansas Mississippi Tennessee and Alabama show significant declines in cotton percentages, with further injury possible though overall district yields may still top last year. Harvesting has begun and will expand by Sept 20, while corn yields are expected adequate for home use.
At a United States Hay Fever association adjourned meeting in Bethlehem New Hampshire officers were elected including President Frank B Fay of Chelsea Massachusetts and secretary treasurer C C Dawson of Lowell There was broad discussion of remedies with support and opposition for Turkish baths and other experiments. The session adjourned to August 1886.
Joshua Hinchett of Rock street Lowell rose to hang himself in his barn. His wife found him and held his legs while a butcher Fred Saunders cut the rope. Four physicians treated him as he fought death. morphine quieted him. He has suffered temporary insanity and is not expected to recover. The family, including a wife, two sons and a daughter, survives.

Springfield Sept 7 Ex President Arthur assisted in ceremonies at Lenox Mass for the Trinity Episcopal church cornerstone laying. He placed the tin history box in the stone while Col Auchwertz presided. The service featured Rev Hield Rev William Wilberforce Newton and Rev Mr Lawrence with Senator Dawes Judge Rockwell and Lawyer Choate among attendees.
In Hart county Kentucky a divorced farmer James Blakeman tangled with caregiver Lemon Lazarus over a child. Lazarus shot Blakeman as a shielded boy watched, then Lazarus was badly wounded and may die after being hunted by Lazarus’s son.
SouTH YARMOUTH Mass Sept 7 The cranberry crop outlook for this season in Barnstable Dennis and Harwich towns appears favorable with yields up to average. Fruit worm damage is light frost has not yet occurred and picking began last week on the early black variety. The bogs in this town alone are valued at 40000 to 50000 dollars and several new bogs were built in the past year.
Chicago authorities report the death inspector condemned 170 cholera struck hogs to tanks in the past week and 29 more killed and dressed hogs found ready for market at a yards slaughterhouse. The hogs belonged to various send nets operating in the yards amid rising cholera prevalence and alleged misrepresentation by buyers evading inspectors.
A large, enthusiastic Dockland gathering led by Meyer Case discussed erecting a new depot nearer the business center. Speakers included G W Kimball Hon D N Morland Gen Davis Lilison as resolutions endorsing the plan were adopted. A committee will confer with depot directors to prevail the case.
Miss Nellie Elliott, 23, living with Lavery relatives near Sutton, cut her throat with a razor yesterday morning. The larynx is severed but recovery is hoped. Found at 10 am in her room, she left a note with a penitential quotation and the words, O forgive, forgive. She has behaved oddly of late and her father is in a state lunatic asylum locally.
R. R. Bowker secretary of the American free trade league writes to the Troquis club secretary accepting the invitation to hold the next annual conference in this city. He proposes November 18 and 19 as the convention dates.
Delegates at the thirtieth annual convention of the German Roman Catholic Central society paraded through Brooklyn streets with 15 divisions and many bands.
Wonurn Massachusetts Sept 7 Sydney Bartlett aged 10 was killed instantly this afternoon when he was run over by a gravel train while attempting to steal a ride.
New York September 7 report on the first international American Cup race. Light wind left Puritan and Genesta unable to complete the course as 35 000 spectators watched. Genesta’s sharp stays and quick handling impressed Boston New York yachtsmen though wind limits thwarted a finish. Luckenbach tow boat to lightship. race postponed with a new attempt planned.
Thousands of workers paraded in Chicago and New York on September 7 to press for an eight hour day and labor rights. The Chicago march drew about 8000 in a gun free display, while New York saw about 25 000 participants with banners from carpenters tailors printers and painters. Speakers urged ballot over violence and defend free institutions while denouncing convict labor. The event showcased orderly crowds and bands, with many out of town groups participating.
Jackson police found unable to curb disorderly elements so a police commission took control. Late Saturday night a new gambling room was raided and Mayor Pringle City Attorney Peck Joseph Hanan and about a dozen others including wealthy citizens were present. No arrests were made but names were recorded for further action.
Greenfield Massachusetts September 7 H C Whitney a transient here was arraigned before Justice Williams charged with obtaining goods under false pretences from W E Clark stove dealer. He will have an exam Friday. He bought goods from various merchants promising repayment but failed to pay. Goods were boxed and shipped to Baltimore, Massachusetts, and a woman he lived with shipped out but were overtaken at Bernardston by a Greenfield officer and Whitney was brought back in irons.
A Sunday night mob attacked Pike county jail in Murfreesboro and failed to shoot the Polk brothers, accused of murder. They piled wood soaked in coal oil around the cell and roasted the prisoners alive, leaving only brick walls standing. The Polks had murdered four peddlers last year and faced multiple trials, with this incident marking the third mob attempt.
Lawrence Mass Sept 7 Burglars broke into John Kendall’s Boxford home at dawn demanding money Kendall said all his funds were in another room They threatened to kill him and his wife if they cried out before fleeing after smashing tables and ironware.
NEW HAVEN Conn Sept 7 The yacht Sunlight of Hull YC limped into harbor leaking badly and was placed on the dry dock awaiting repairs, en route to New York. The schooner William Beazley bound for Bangor is aground hogged and being stripped as crew and cargo are removed by Wrecker Scott of New London. A government contract to remove 1000 yards of harbor mud was awarded to Dubois's Sons of Brooklyn at six cents per yard. Alderman Henry F Goebel, accused of misappropriating 600 dollars from brewer Joseph Weidel, refunded the money today.
A string of brief, uneven items from New Haven and nearby towns include the death of 11 year old John McQueeney in an apparent accident while stealing a ride on a freight train, a $10,000 pest claim against Littleton town by Mrs. Myron Eastman, injuries to Emery N. Wood in Biddeford from an elevator incident, and Ellen Aldrich an unstable inmate who escaped a farmhouse. Other notes cover local harvest estimates, a Belmont fire injuring Emma Prescott, a burglary in Durham, a coroner appointment in New Haven County, a Vermont telephone rate protest, and a fatal shooting involving a two year old in Greenfield care of a visitor’s pistol.

Crown counsel described the abduction and mistreatment of the girl. The crowd hissed as Stead and Jarrett left after bail was set.

Edward Hanlan George Lee and Wallace Ross competed for $1200 at Sheepshead Bay with lapses and fouls marred the event. New Bedford reports nearly finished arrangements for a reception by Thomas Dalton commanding No 7 Knights Templars colored, in New Bedford on Oct 6 for the commanderies of New York Providence Boston and Worcester. Mayor Kotch to view the parade and Adelphi rink reception to follow. A single scull race this evening between C C Tilton W C Sheehan and J C Forbes of the New Bedford Amateur Knowing association saw Tilton win in 13 minutes 5 seconds around the Dolphin course.
In Jefferson Long Island a boy described as the son of King Pharoah of the Montauk tribe was found in the bay with a battered face. Officials suspect murder and are searching for two Negro men last seen with him. An inquest is planned for today.
Probate confirms the will of Mrs. Maria E. Johnson. She leaves 10000 to Christchurch parish and 10000 to the United Workers. The residue about 50000 funds a home for aged and needy women in Newwich upon the death of her niece Mrs. T J Mc Clenuelien of Guilford.
Augusta dispatch reports John Ball, 60, an inmate at Togus National Home, went into West Windsor woods for a hunt and was found today with his head blown off. Officials say his mind has been affected.
