The senate defeated a motion to postpone the Dec 30 deadline for beer production restrictions. A proposed change to extend no sales from July 1 until the war ends was rejected, ensuring no brewery activity beyond the wartime cutoff.
The Food Administration announced that manufacturing of beer in the United States will stop after December 1 as a war measure. The decision followed a conference including President Wilson and leaders from the fuel, food, and rail administrations and the War Industries Board. The Senate also passed a 12 million dollar emergency agricultural appropriation with a rider proposing national prohibition from July 1 until demobilization after the war.
French troops report progress against retreating German forces along the Vesle front with advances toward Chemin des Dames. Mangin’s army eyes a flank trap as German positions yield ground. Ham captured by French units signaling reinforcement of the push toward the Hindenburg Line.

In the Noyon salient French forces seize the important junction towns of Ham and Chauny as part of their advance. The move strengthens their position and disrupts German lines in the region.

Miss Bessie Marr, 36, a nurse in the Holbrook residence on North Franklin street, was instantly killed this afternoon when crushed between the house elevator and the shaft wall. The tragedy occurred at the Holbrook home in Holbrook.
Five lives are reported lost when United Fruit Company's steamer Almirante sank after a collision with the U S supply ship Hisco nine miles east-southeast of the Atlantic City lighthouse in heavy fog. The Hisco recovered four victims along with survivors, and a coast guard crew placed the fifth body aboard.
The Almirante departed New York for West Indian and Central American ports under Captain Farquhar Grant with a small passenger list. The 5000 ton Belfast built liner, long operated by United Fruit and now American registry, recently logged a rescue of the Vanderbilt steam yacht Warrior’s passengers and crew near the Magdalena River mouth in Colombia.
