The Senate foreign relations committee completed work on the German peace treaty and adopted four reservations to the League covenant before ordering the pact reported to the Senate. A minority report was anticipated, with debate expected to start around September 15th.
The State Commission on the Necessaries of Life will employ its new power to summon meat dealers who ignored a prior request to attend the hearing. A small number of dealers appeared yesterday, most of whom were not profiteers, so progress was limited. Sheriffs will issue summonses to enforce attendance at the continued session in Room 426 at 10 o clock Monday.
The Boston Elevated board of trustees announced a new 5-cent fare for South Boston to start October 1. General Manager Edward L. Dana said the plan will run on a trial basis and may be continued if successful.
Mayor Peters asked Commissioner Curtis to postpone action on the police union cases. Curtis delayed making his findings public after receiving the mayor’s letter. He would not announce his decision until Monday. Continued on Page 18 Seventh Col.
In Forest Hills New York on September 4 1919 William M Johnston of San Francisco beat William T Tilden II of Philadelphia in straight sets to win the national turf singles championship at the West Side Club.
President Wilson appeals to Americans across the country to accept his interpretation of the peace treaty as part of a nationwide tour. He argues labor clauses will raise workers’ status globally and hints at the League of Nations solving Ireland issues as part of the broader peace plan. Continued on Page 13.
Today recalls 1914 naval events with Pathfinder blown up by a submarine and Runo sunk by a mine. In 1916 the U S Senate passed a retaliatory bill over Britain blacklist policy. A year ago the Allies advanced 90 miles and U S troops moved on the Vesle Aisne front while Mt. Vernon was torpedoed off France.
In Newport on September 4, actor Jesse Washington, a Black performer, drowned during a sea scene on the navy submarine R-1. While filming a staged fight with O'Brien, the submarine submerged and Washington failed to surface, likely from a heart attack or stun. rescuers located him 200 yards off Bishop's Rock near the naval training station.

A revised system proposes two distinct lines to South station. One route runs from L Street and Broadway via Summer Street extension to South station and back. The other travels from Dorchester Street via Dorchester Avenue to South station and back. The Dorchester tunnel would not be included in reduced fare plans.
Charles P. Rowe, 21, of Granite Street Somerville, veteran of the 101st Engineers, is at Somerville Hospital with a deep head gash and possible skull fracture after pushing two children out of the path of a falling tree. He was cutting down the tree on Washington Street with a highway crew when the incident occurred. Rowe regained consciousness later at the hospital.
Matthew E Kealey 7 year old elevator operator at 64 Beacon Street was crushed when the elevator started accidentally in the South End last night. Firefighters and police fought to free his body from the elevator well. rescue efforts failed and life was extinct.
Forecasts for Boston and vicinity call for fair conditions Friday and Saturday with little temperature change and moderate variable winds. A tropical disturbance centered over eastern Santo Domingo this morning moves northwest and should pass west of Turks Island by Thursday night.
