The Sirdar General Sir Herbert Kitchener entered Omdurman at 4 pm at the head of the Anglo-Egyptian column after routing the Dervishes. Our losses were about 20. thousands of Dervishes killed or wounded. The army camped at Agaiza, eight miles from Omdurman last night.
The Ninth Massachusetts Regiment wounded and sick from Montauk are due in Boston by Tuesday. Citizens and local hack owners pledge to transport home any soldiers in need, signaling wide community support. The Lewiston, with capacity for 200, sails from Montauk to provide care and comfort aboard with surgeons and nurses onboard.
Reports say the Iowa suffered flooding in its engine rooms after an open sea valve allowed water into the hull as the ship was being floated in dry dock No. 8 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Officials shut caisson valves to stop the intake. the extent of damage remains to be assessed.
The sloop Daisy of South Boston owned by J. J. Donahue ran ashore on Clifton Heights rocks early this morning. Occupants including Captain Donahue and four men were saved by local summer residents after the vessel struck and sank a hole in its hull. The party named were J. J. Donahue, George W. McCarthy, Edward Blaisdell, John Mulcahy, and 12 year old Charles Hastings, all of South Boston. The yacht is expected to break up tonight.
Forecasts show thunderstorms and cooler conditions in the afternoon across New England and eastern New York. Boston area expected partly cloudy with possible thunderstorms and warm southwest to west winds.
At dawn British and Egyptian troops faced a large Dervish advance near Omdurman. The fight featured heavy artillery exchanges, a notable charge by the Twenty first Lancers, and casualties including Lieutenant Grenfel and Colonel Rhodes among the wounded. The battle ended with the Anglo Egyptian lines driving the enemy into the desert.
General Kitchener telegraphs that Howard the war correspondent for the London Times was killed during the capture of Omdurman. He is identified as Hon. Hubert George Lyulph Howard, second son of the Earl of Carlisle.
The Roumania transport arrived at Camp Wikoff with 600 convalescents including Companies K and I of the Ninth Massachusetts. Seven deaths occurred on the homeward trip, three of them from the Ninth Regiment, listing the names that follow.
Boston hosts a Labor Day program with a parade from Massachusetts Avenue to Tremont and a Scotch picnic at Caledonian Grove. Highland Cadets and Boston Fusileers may attend, with band music, drills, and reviews by Mayor Quincy. Other picnics, reunions, and sporting events fill the day across multiple venues.
