Welles Defends Farragut as New Orleans Captor Hero
In Hartford the secretary argues Admiral Farragut captured New Orleans on April 25, 1862, not May 1, 1872, and criticizes War Department records for omitting his name. He asserts repeated injustices against Farragut and calls the chronology untruthful in downplaying his role and declaring Porter’s credit.
