In the war's fiercest fighting on the Russian left, General Kuroki's Japanese forces press hard to trap Kuropatkin. Casualties soar with about 25 000 Japanese and at least 30 000 Russians dead or wounded in three days. Russians allegedly drowned in the Taitse River as retreating forces faltered amid fires at Liaoyang.
Eugene L. Stafford walked into Station 5 and surrendered after nine weeks in Delaware. He admitted firing the shot that killed Maynor E. Police at Station 3 arrest Frank J. Biggie 20 of Casson place at the White Star docks on suspicion of fatally injuring an unknown man found with a fractured skull on Norman street. Biggie, seen with the victim shortly before the murder and drinking with him hours earlier, is under 48 hours surveillance. The murdered man’s identity remains undisclosed.
The shooting of Trussell occurred in Mrs. Stafford's apartments at 208 West Springfield Street on Feb 17. The motive was said to be the woman's affections. Trussell and Stafford were once connected in the aeronaut line and, with Mrs. Stafford, gave exhibitions throughout New England. After the shooting Stafford disappeared and police had no clue to his whereabouts.
Police under Sergeant Sweeney and Special Officer McDevitt raided a 40 Clinton Street poker game last evening arresting four prominent market men. Officers climbed ladders to reach the second story while the occupants fled through open windows due to the hot evening.
An auto and a car collided on Washington Street near Temple Place at about 10 40 last evening. The crash caused an explosion but resulted in no serious injuries, only a blown rear tire and a few frightened passengers.
A skeleton discovered by 14 year old Charles Bender in a condemned Roxbury barn rear 27 Conant Street leads police to call it a murder mystery. Medical examiner to view remains at E J Gilmore undertaker. no clothing found and crawl space suggests foul play. The barn, part of Julia Hanagan estate, has been unused for years.
The ferryboat Revere of the South ferry line drifted from the East Boston slip after a stop in the centre halted its machinery. Tug Pallas saved it from collision with Cunard docks and a granite schooner. Passengers supported the captains for a safe tow back to the slip.
In Worcester on September 2 the health bulletin reports Senator George F. Hoar is not worse and is holding his own after a comfortable night. The Rev Dr Edward Everett Hale visited him, giving a hopeful note to the day.
Tony Garriero 12 of Brookline climbs an electric pole on Boylston Street and becomes entangled in wires. He falls and dies as firemen rescue him, taken to his uncle Joseph Silva's home. Doctors fail to revive him. his father Antonio Carriero lives in South Boston.
